crazzy88ss
Just a quick breakdown. D90 D5000 sensor: 12.3mp cmos 12.3mp cmos same FPS: 4.5 4.0 hardly a difference Video: crappy 720p 24FPS crappy 720p 24 FPS same AF system: 11 points 11 points same mount: standard F-mount AF-S only, I think D90 wins, although it's not that big of a deal any more body: larger body with smaller body This one depends on a few things... I prefer D90, but that's a personal choice. screen on top Screen: 3" 920K 2.7" tilt D90's screen is a lot more clearer. D5000's is more versatile. Toss up. CLS: Yes No D90 wins Looking at this, why would anybody spend the ~$300 extra to get the D90? The only significant difference is the body size and the D90's ability to do CLS. They both have the exact same sensor. Am I out of line in thinking that Nikon shot themselves in the foot with this? The D90's sales will probably suffer quite a bit. lawtai
I think I also read that there were differences with the viewfinder as well? From what I understand, the D90 has done pretty well in sales, so I'm not sure that it's really losing that many buyers to the d5000, though I could be wrong. Also, the feel of the camera can go a long way. That's what led me to a Nikon D50 in the beginning instead of the Canon equivalent when i first bought my camera a few years back. I currently have the D90, though I bought it last year, so no d5000 to compete with.
sambrentnall
I started off with the D40 and will be upgrading to the D90 in September. The main reasons are the ability for CLS, screen on top, more buttons ie change settins quicker. Better handling of high ISO, I do a lot of gig of club photography. I think you left out a LOT of things in that comparison. to stat with the ability for a battery grip, direct access butons for practically all fucntions. And tilt screen is useless since liveView is useless. And I'm guessing a lot more techncial stuff though I didn't feel like doing an actual spec sheet comparison. giga Veteran Posted May 23, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 23, 2009 Look through a D5000 viewfinder and then look through your D90's.
Diffused Mind
The inclusion of an AF motor in the D90 would be enough to win me over. Are the sensor models the same?

Murkey
Buying mostly secondhand lenses, lack of AF motor would seriously limit my options. Hell, for that reason I nearly sprang for the D300, just to have a go with AIS lenses.
crazzy88ss
I would hands down choose the D90 so would I. But if there's one thing I've learned, it's that internet forums, especially techy ones like neowin, are vastly different than the general public. I've rarely actually meet people randomly who know what the "A" and "S" do on the command dial on their cameras...

My friend, who's been shooting for a few years now made that statement very obvious last night. It was a facepalm moment for me.
qdave
i've got d90 as well. in fact i've purchased it in april. i absolutely love viewfinder, info screen (which i use more often then the settings in the bottom of viefinder), better lcd screen, better iso, and i generally like how it feels. since it was my first dslr it also had better kit lens. if it was worth price difference? prolly not but i would still choose d90 :p
rikfrombelgium
just started a topic with the same question and now found this one, sorry, so any of you guys changed their minds? there's arround ?200 difference in price between them with the 18-105mm VR lens, I'm leaning towards the D90 because it's better build and more versatile. Also, for some reason, because I find it prettier ( I know, who gives a **** ) but it also lays better in my hand.
crazzy88ss
Ok... sounds like you picked the D90.
rikfrombelgium
I'm leaning towards it yes, partly because of the quality problems with the D5000. But if think differently or have advice, I'd be glad to hear it.
Si_
I have a D90 and it's one of the best investments i've made. The screen quality is amazing, is so much easier to see if i've got a decent shot before moving on. Inclusion of AF motor is a winner as well.
