iMac screen turning on at random times?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a slight problem with my iMac from september 2006...

First of all, I usually leave the computer ON all the time, but it's in my bedroom, so I set up an Expos? corner in the bottom left that turns OFF the LCD monitor. The computer doesn't "sleep" during the night (it stays connected to the Internet and the hard drive is never suspended).

The problem is, my monitor turns ON at random times during the night or day... when you're in bed at 3AM and there's a huge light coming from the computer... it pretty much screws a whole hour of sleep... seriously:pp

So does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this? I thought it was Mail or Adium with their notifications, but no. I quit them sometimes and it's still happening. I thought it was the mouse, but I tried turning it OFF and it didn't fix the problem either.

Thanks,

Dave

It always happens to mine as well. I never questioned it, figuring it was my overly sensitive mouse feeling a tremor. I have a late 2007 aluminum iMac.

it happens to mine at random times also, but i have found out that is the bluetooth disconnecting, i use the BT mighty mouse and BT Keyboard.

the computer goes to sleep as normal when not in use, then suddenly wakes up because the BT lost connection and then it reconnects instantly, is really annoying and it happens at random times, it could be doing it for a couple of days, then it stops for a few weeks then it starts doing it again.

Put it to sleep? ;)

Yeah, I guess it'll be my solution, but when I have downloads going on, I think it shuts down the internet connection. And I can't put an expos? corner for that:pp

It's still strange because my Bluetooth is turned off... At least I know I'm not the only one having this issue!

Happens to me as well. Worst part is it won't turn off after that even if the energy saver says so. What I did to get around it was set the screensaver instead of the sleep display. Activate screen saver then when the time comes for sleep display to kick in, it will properly. If you manually sleep display and it comes on, it won't go back to sleep. If it awakes when it put itself to sleep it will put itself back to sleep.

Still shouldn't happen but if you enable screensaver first it will be alright. Mine turned on one night and burned a bunch of program windows into the display. I was able to correct it but now I let it sleep on its own.

On the bright side, my iMac screen recently decided to go into permanent sleep. LCD must have died as screen sharing works fine but the main display won't even turn the backlight on :( I suggest you get AppleCare but yours is long overdue if it doesn't have it already. Replacing the LCD could cost over 1000 without a warranty.

I have AppleCare until September... I'm not sure that I understand the risks you're talking about though...

I've never felt like the LCD was going to die

I get this on mine too - it seemed to ease off when I disabled growl for a while, however, it come back while growl was still off so I'm still no closer to finding out why.
