Action/Adventure game

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

- Well I'm mostly a P&C guy and I wanted to try an Action/Adventure game. I tried L4D but I found it too boring in solo mode, and I don't wanna play online. How about Mirror's Edge ? or Assassin's Creed ? Any recommendations ? :)

PS : I'm looking for something like Metal Gear, Splinter Cell, Max Payne etc ... (no Crysis, Farcry, ...)

Thks !

Half Life 2 and the two following episodes. Mirror's edge is more of a prototype for first person action. Assassin's Creed is an absolute waste of time with no interesting variation in gameplay.

Recommended:

Bioshock

Half Life 2 (if you haven't played it)

The Witcher (the best action rpg that came out two years ago)

Mass Effect

Make sure you like the gameplay before shelling out money for them. The Witcher is quite dark and moody (gothic themed) and Bioshock is a macabre 50's theme. You might want to look into Mass Effect if you love sci fi like me. If you have a slower computer, then look into Fable since that's a solid adventure/action/rpg game.

From your first post I get the impression that your looking for 3rd person games. So far no one has posted anything in the criteria you have asked for.

The Witcher and Mass Effect are both roleplaying games, whereas half life 2, fear 2 and bioshock are all first person shooters.

None of the above games are anything like Metal Gear, Splinter Cell etc.

I'd try out Assassins Creed, it does get repetitive but it's got lovely gfx and storytelling and is definitely worth a try.

If your willing to try games that are more than a year old you could try Beyond Good and Evil which is an awesome action/adventure game,

Psychonauts, a cool Platform/adventure game,

The new Prince of Persia if you can pick it up cheap, it gets very repetitive but is strictly third person action/adventure with an emphasiss on adventure. Regardless of what other people say I myself had a blast playing through it till the end.

If you don't mind playing a role playing game then definately pick up Mass Effect, The Witcher or Both. It's hard to choose out of them though personally I like the Witcher more as it has soo much game in it and I like the gothic setting. That said, they are currently remaking The Witcher so you might just wanna wait for that. Edit: Damn the remakes only for consoles. Lol I stopped playing the original because I wanted to wait for the remake the gfx look way nicer. Oh well.

One last game that's pretty cool is Dead Space, it's more Survival Horror than Adventure but it's really sweet so check that out too.

Two words: Mass Effect. It's a 3rd person action role-playing game set in the future.

Thanks for the answers guys :)

- I actually tried Mass Effect and didn't like it. I'm not a futuristic/space-opera guy at all :/

@stunts,

- Yeah I like RPGs. I have never played an occidental RPG before so I might give The Witcher a shot. Price of Persia, Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts are definitely what I'm looking for, I'm gonna have to read some reviews to choose one or two games.

Beyond Good and Evil surprised me, liked it a lot. I think BG&E 2 is in the works.

Bioshock is great also, loved it. Bioshock 2 is nearing release, I think November.

What is an occidental RPG? Is that another way to say western RPG?

I really hope you're not actually inferring he doesn't pick up Mirror's Edge, I can personally vouch for Mirror's Edge being a great game. Yes, it's a little short, but I'd still say it's a great and fun game to play regardless.

Tomb Raider:Underworld was surprisingly good - less combat more puzzles/exploration and considering combat has always been TR's weak point that's a definate plus.

Older games:

Jade Empire

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic I & II

Fable

They're all quality action rpg's.

Ive played all of those and I agree. I was initially disappointed with Fable because I followed it from its Project Ego roots. IMO it fell so short of the Project Ego goal, but taken on its own I really liked it and would recommend it, particularly The Lost Chapters version.

^ Well occidental as opposed to oriental RPG (Japanese ones)

Terms like occidental and even oriental have fallen out of favour in the west. I wouldn't call someone of East-Asian decent "oriental" these days as it might incur offense.

There is another complication in using the term "Asian" since that generally means East Asian in North America but it generally means South Asian in the U.K.

I live the UK and still regularly hear and use the term oriental to describe Japan/China/Korea etc.

As to the games suggestions above, all are good

I've played every single one that has been suggested for you and mostly enjoyed all of them...

I'd go for:

Jade Empire - A bloody good RPG game with a pretty awesome story. (I keep hoping to hear Bioware will do a sequel)

Tron 2.0 - Is a game set about 20 years after the old Tron film and is very similar to Deus Ex, just set inside computers.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky - Both these are really good games, you just have to get past the first hour or so and try to ignore the sadly large number of bugs.

Messiah - A rather old, but still very enjoyable 3rd person game where you play a cherub sent to earth to stop the devil, it is slightly adult-themed and suprisingly good fun.

Also if your into the GTA-style, open-world crime games try to track down a copy of Mafia, it's seriously one of the best games I've ever played, with a really excellent story and there is supposed to be a sequel to it at some point soon...

I know that most of those are FPS games, but they aren't totally run-and-gun Doom/Quake style mindless ones, they actually require a little thought and planning as they posses rpg-lite elements.

Huh, I never have heard the term occidental in the way its used in this thread and Oriental is a definite no-no in the US, but I'm not sure why. Asian seems to be accepted across the board in my experience. I do hear Asian-American a lot, but if I was Chinese or Korean or Japanese, etc. that would rub me wrong...the whole hyphenated thing bugs me a little. Is the hyphen used everywhere? African-Hungarians or Mexican-Iranians? Hey look, I'm an Offtopic-Neowinian.

It's an American thing. Indian American, Chinese American, Japanese American... They're all used to describe minorities here on state side. It's definitely not an insult to be called that.

Its a way to describe ethnicity background. US and Canada have so many immigrants and this is used to describe where they came from originally. In Europe if you are born in let say Germany and you are of a chinese descent no body is going to consider you german, german citizen yes, but not german, you'll be chinese for the rest of the people.
