Emily_June
Actually, I only have a question about one symbol, and it's somewhat hard to explain. It could even just be a Steam standard, not just TF2. It looks like a white MSN buddy symbol, and it sits to the left of a person's avatar in the details when you hold tab. My boyfriend always has it next to his name when we play together which, I assumed, meant he was on my buddy list. The thing is that it's showing up for a lot more people than just him, while he's the only person on my list at all. He suggested that maybe it's people who have sent me friend invites, but I'm not getting anything of the sort. So what does it mean? I can't find anything about it, anywhere. It's insignificant, I know, but it's driving me crazy. -Emily
ViperAFK
It means they are on your list, dont know why it would show for others.
Emily_June
It means they are on your list, dont know why it would show for others. So... probably just a bug? I generally see it for 5+ people/game. Anyone else experience this? And is there any way to fix it?
Denis W. Veteran Posted May 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2009 There was one time where I got buddy icons showing up beside people who clearly weren't my friends, or haven't sent me friend invites. It went away the next night.

Denis W. Veteran Posted May 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2009 Go into your profile settings (Community > Edit my profile > Settings); try setting both options to "private." Does this happen on only one server, or many servers?
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2009 (edited) The icon indicates that the person is on your friends list. It shouldn't be shown beside someone that isn't your friend. Edited May 28, 2009 by Anaron
SMELTN
I think there is a problem with it showing friends of friends now too, like xfire does

Many servers. It didn't seem to be doing it tonight, although it wasn't showing my boyfriend as a friend, either. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted May 28, 2009 Veteran Share Posted May 28, 2009 Perhaps it shows people in the same group as you. I added that in my initial post but later edited it out because I wasn't sure. Check your group and view the players that are currently in-game. Join them and see if they show an icon beside their name.
Emily_June
@ Anaron I'm not sure what you mean by same "group" as myself. As far as I know, I don't play in groups with people. I play alone, or I play with Ryan, generally in random servers with strangers.

Pajter
As far I know, this is just an annoying bug. I've had this ever since I started playing TF2. Sometimes my real friends don't show up, just random people. Then there are missing avatars, names, etc. sometimes. It's all just buggy, don't worry about it. :)
Emily_June
I was referring to the Steam Community groups. For example, I'm a member of the Neowin Steam Group. I reckon I'm a lone wolf when it comes to gaming; I don't belong to any groups and I rarely have more than family members and Ryan on my friends lists (PC & console gaming) As far I know, this is just an annoying bug. I guess I just got so curious about it, and the fact that I couldn't find anything about it anywhere made me all the more curious. Good to know I'm not just missing something, though. Pajter
It probably has more to do with Steam than TF2. But it's no big deal. I just ignore it. :) Now if Valve could just fix the new weapon unlocking system... :(
