'Highway' the stray dog finds indoor home

FORT WORTH, Texas, May 27 (UPI) -- Texas animal authorities said a stray dog that lived for more than a year around a convergence of freeways in Fort Worth has found a permanent home.

The Humane Society of North Texas said the dog, named Highway after she was rescued 18 months ago from a highway-filled area east of downtown Fort Worth, is now living with Blake Travis, a former Humane Society employee who helped rescue the dog, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.

Travis, 25, and a coworker captured the dog Nov. 28, 2007, and took her to a facility with 400 other rescued canines.

"She was basically feral," Travis said. "She hadn't had any human contact and didn't want any."

Travis said Highway, who is estimated to be 5 or 6-years-old, warmed to the company of other dogs and eventually bonded with her rescuer.
