Windows 7 Compatible Software

Recommended Posts

Alright Neowin Windows 7 Users, I'd like you to submit your lists of confirmed working software with Windows 7, with none to as little tweaking as possible & with little to no ill effects; i.e. what works out of the box (relatively natively). Please state the maker, title, and version of software and where you got it. Also, please include what build of Windows 7 you have tested it on.

Let's save people headachs and compile a known working list so people can avoid conflicts and frustrations with nonworking software. Here's my list so far...

I can confirm the following to work correctly (or as expected) on Windows 7 RC1 on a MSI Wind U100 Netbook:

~~ Working ~~

?Torrent v1.8.2 (Freeware) -- Torrent Downloader >> http://www.utorrent.com/

IZArc v4.0 (Beta 1 Build 1760) (Freeware) -- Multi Format Extract / Unextract Utility >> http://www.izarc.org/

Apple iTunes v8.1.1.10 (Freeware) >> http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

~~ Tweaked ~~

Symantic Endpoint Protection v11.0.4202.75 (Comercialware) (Other versions seem to Blue Screen on Me)

-- Antivirus, Antispyware, Malware Protection

Notes: Installed "Live Update" portion first, rebooted, then continued to install setup program. Win 7 is reporting all ok except saying that it's reporting it's status to Windows 7 "in a format that is no longer supported " (Even after running Live Update several times)

DAEMON Tools Lite v4.30.4 (with SPTD 1.58) (Freeware) -- Virtual Disc & Disk Drive Drivers

Notes: Windows 7 reported that there were known issues, after reviewing DAEMON Tools Lite Website and seeing that the updated "SPTD" was supposed to be Windows 7 Compatible, I ignored Windows 7 and all seem to be ok for now.

~~ Unsure ~~

ImgBurn v2.4.4.0 (Freeware) -- Disc Image Burner

Notes: Everything seemed to install fine and application launches correctly; however when I atempted to burn a disc it failed 1/2 through (this could be due to a number of reasons unrelated to Windows 7 itself) Haven't atempted any other burns as I am currently out of CDs; may try to burn a DVD of new Windows 7 Build 7137.

Is it not better starting with programs that are not compatible with Windows 7? I thought the majority were compatible considering 7 is build from Vista.

It's somewhat amusing that a lot of the software listed in the original post is primarily used for facilitating piracy.

Anyway, software with issues:

East West PLAY 1.2.5 -- Installer fails on 1305. Workaround involves modifying NTFS access permissions.

PACE iLok Driver -- Installer fails. Workaround involves manually installing the driver from the hidden temporary folder created.

MP3 Tag Studio 3.5b20 -- About dialogue causes the main window to disappear.

Steam -- Gaming overlay conflicts with OpenGL games on ATI cards (possibly only 4xxx series).

Software that works:

Cubase 4.5.2

UAD Powered Plugins 5.3

NOD32 x64 4.0.437.0

Creative PatchMix DSP

+1

There are only a handful of applications that don't work with 7, but there are thousands upon thousands that work perfectly.

 ROFL, I didn't even realize that. Must have done that subconciously ;)

While most may be compatible, few are writen natively for support in Windows 7. Just because an XP program or Vista program can work in Windows 7, doesn't mean it should. Unsupported code bases in programs can lead to conflicts, bugs, and instability... For instance, on my Wind U100 Netbook, it came with a program called "System Control Manager" (SCM by MSI) to Monitor Hot Keys (FN + F_ ) to control hardware devices and drivers such as increasing screen brightness, enabling and disabling wireless, muting and unmuting sound. While the program installs just fine under Windows 7 with no warnings and even loads fine on startup and seems to function... there are issues with brightness adjustments not working even though status indication shows it is, nor disabling wireless (SCM shows wireless disabled, but Windows still allows wireless network activity).

I believe that Windows 7 platform should be kept clean of Foreign code base designed for older Operating Systems; if you want to run old software keep using your old Operating System. Development should transition into the New Age by apealing to Windows 7 Native APIs.

Vmware Thinapp 4.0.2 (build 3089) doesnt work. No workarounds available for now other than waiting for an update.

Also Running ThinApped programs in Windows 7 is not working at this time

Microsoft Photo Story 3 is incompatible

Windows Movie Maker 2.6 Appears to be working although warning screen of incorrect resolution apears on this MSI Wind Netbook during App startup, else everything seems fine.

I have had problems with Tunebite 5.0. I have not been able to get it to run successfully even in compatibility mode under Win7 7100 x32. Others have had similar problems, according to threads in that product's forums. Everything else works great.

Anybody managed to get daemon tools lite to work on win7 7201 x64?

The installation loops at the SPTD install, can't get it past that installation process.

It tells me it has to restart, comes back on, installs SPTD, restarts and repeats itself.

It worked fine on 7100, but after upgrade i can't get it to install.

Anyone had the same problems?

Paint and Calculator seem OK. Notepad only works in XP SP2 comp. mode.

I see what you did there :p

Surely easier to list apps with problems?

Daemon Tools has worked fine for a while now, you just have to install the SPTD drivers separately before you install it. Check out this thread for all the info you need. (Skip to the "Edit" section so you don't have to deal with installing Daemon Tools Pro first, after installing that, just install as normal and it works great)

This method it tested and working on 7201 x64 (clean install.)

does anyone know if it's safe to use CCleaner on Win7 RC?

I've used it, and it works perfectly for me.

If seen these threads all over the place and arent they kinda redundant? Ok, basicly everything that was compatible with Windows Vista is more then likely working on 7 unless it does a version check by itself and then denies access. If it doesnt,, every version of windows since XP has compatiblitiy mode, use it, that is what it is there for. Windows 7 even goes beyond that with XP Mode.
