Possible to copy profile/arcade content to flash drive?

Recommended Posts

Here's the situation: A friend is letting me use his spare 360 until I get my own (2 months away). In the meantime, I've already got a live gold account and purchased a few arcade games from live marketplace. I know I can buy a 360 memcard, but thats another $40. Does MS allow you to use flash drives?

No, you have to use a memory card. Once you get your Xbox though you can just re-download the games as long as they were bought under your gamertag.

I can now confirm it doesn't work. Plugged in a 1GB flash drive and it didn't show up under storage devices. Shame MS doesn't allow flash drive usage given their PC roots. What if you bought a game that gets removed from XBL and need to re-download it? I bought Double Dragon and it was removed like 24hrs later. Why do they remove titles in the first place? They could create a "bargain bin" to list the slow sellers and still keep things nice and tidy.

I believe you can download removed titles that you own still by checking for them in the Download History option somewhere in the Live Account settings area. I can't give you exact directions on how to find it because I'm at work and have no 360 around. Plus I don't think I've tried it since the NXE launched. I think they may have added the same feature to xbox.com though with the online marketplace roll out.

It won't show up in storage devices, but under media (Pics, Music or movies) it will show up as a connected device. The only thing you can use a flash drive for is displaying pics, or playing music or movies.

Shame. Maybe they'll open it up a bit in a future update. $30 for a 512MB card is pretty steep these days.

I'd suggest buying a used 20gig HD off of ebay. Should be less than $40. Then "recover" your profile and redownload your games. Then just buy one of the cheap new systems with on-board flash and die-shrunk chips (the pack that ships with the SEGA Tennis game seems to reliably include the newest model). When you get your own 360 you're going to want to use xbox.com to retrieve your licenses so that they are attached to your new system and hard drive anyway (otherwise they will only work if you are logged in and online with your own gamertag).

Interestingly, you could use regular USB storage devices with the older Xbox (needed an adapter). They would be formatted by the system in fatx, and you could only transfer certain content to them, but it was slightly less locked down than the 360 is.

I plan on getting an elite for the bigger HDD size. So you're able to DL the Lic keys to the XBL games so you don't need to be signed in to your XBL account? As of now, all my purchased games show as trial unless I login to XBL.
