kimsland
Now there must be an area where I can tick to say, Subscribe with immediate email notification, to all threads I reply to. But I just can't find it :ermm: I mean, wouldn't it better that the forum was set up to, by default, allowing automatic subscription to threads I reply to? It seems to be the wrong way around. No one who replies to a new topic subscribes to that topic unless they tick "track this message" (at least I think I'm suppose to "track" the message?) I just want to subscribe automatically (with instant email response) to any topic I reply on (and I think this would be better set to default). Instead of members like me saying, woops forgot to tick the box. Maybe its just me  Edit: Hmm. I think I found it in Email Settings Still don't know why it wasn't set to default though Edited June 2, 2009 by kimsland

kimsland
What do you mean? I started second guessing myself, thinking maybe it is "default" But you are asking why should it be in default setting (to automatically subscribe) ? Because that's whats normal on every forum in the world. If you post reply to a thread (topic) you are automatically subscribed to it, being the best idea of course ;)
Joel
But you are asking why should it be in default setting (to automatically subscribe) ?Because that's whats normal on every forum in the world. You must not visit very many forums. It's absolutely NOT normal on every forum in the world.
kimsland
I am not interested in a debate over this, even though of all the forums I am involved with (really its lots and lots) I have never been to a forum (other than here it would seem) that when you reply (or even create a new topic) that you are not automatically subscribed to it. I feel that by having the normal automatic subscribe (as I have seen well, everywhere) will allow members to receive reply emails without any accidental fault (ie not ticking the box) I also believe this situation (default setting) should be changed immediately here. To allow members the confidence they will see any reply emails come through, without checking through user control panel settings first (as I found I needed to do) Take this as a suggestion to Admin here and not a debate on who's better informed, or who visits the most forums (even though I'd say I'm a member of every tech forum on the net that I know of, including some foreign language forums and some very not so well known ones too) Anyway, I advocate default subscribe to topics when a member has created or replied to the thread itself As for instant email or delayed or whatever, these settings can be user adjusted. But the subscription should be mandatory. Any final words? Or a brief no or yes from Admin would be ideal :)
Rob Veteran Posted June 4, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 4, 2009 Sorry, I have to agree that while many forums do automatically subscribe, it's by no means an accepted standard online. I can't see it changing here on Neowin, but the good news is that you've enabled the option yourself so it shouldn't cause too much concern. Thanks for the suggestion. kimsland
Thanks Joel and Rob for your replies It was an initial annoyance (for me) that is now resolved If there are no other (especially new) members that feel the same as me, then this thread is as good as closed
