Thanks for the info. I do agree with the above tips. For scenic night shots I always leave the flash off and I set the ISO speed as high as possible. (400 typically as this allows for more light to enter the lens) Are you using a tripod by any chance? Perhaps I just don't have a very steady hand.

No tripod and that was taken hanging thorough the cage while the wind was howling at 40 knots and the building swaying 3 feet or more. Higher shutter speeds allow more light but less color and are better for removing the shaking hand syndrome. Maybe I just got lucky. I ended up with about half I could keep from that elevation.

keldyn, be very wary of using anything higher than iso 100 on any non-slr camera. you will get TONS of noise. if i recall correctly, you don't have manual controls on your s400. if you use night mode, it will set your exposure pretty slow, probably like .5-1sec. unless you are using a tripod, you will get tons of camera shake, giving you a blurry image. if you have manual controls, you could speed up the shutter, and open the aperature as wide as possible, thus letting in enough light, but preventing camera shake. your other alternative is using a tripod, or setting the camera on something sturdy.

The S400's have quite a bit of manual control. Iso 100, 200, 400. White balance, exposure balance, settings for indoor light quality, (tungsten, incandescent, etc.) a few shooting modes like B&W, Sepia, Vivid....not bad for a tiny sized digicam. Just enough for me to be dangerous....lol

Thanks a bunch guys. You are right about the "noise" Brochaos. Anything higher than 100 does seem to create a lot of distortion in your images. However, this was the only way I could get enough light into my shots.

I can see I shall have to purchase for myself a tripod. I DID try resting the camera on a friends shoulder but even that was hopeless. LOL I'd say you were very lucky then digitaljames to pull off those shots in such conditions with no tripod (Y)

The S400 does indeed allow for a decent amount of manual control. I am very happy with it.

Shots from Manhattan this past week. Resized to 1024. Canon S400

    • Well Statcounter doesn't count Edge users as Chrome. It uses the user agent and my understanding is the Brave browser users the standard Chrome user agent for privacy/tracking reasons and compatibility so that would help the Chrome numbers. Some Firefox users change the user agent for again compatibility reasons. I am going to totally guess the Chrome numbers are inflated some 5 or 6%.

    • Easier to move to Firefox, either Zen Browser or LibreWolf (which includes it by default)
