Windows 7 General Availability Announced

Recommended Posts

Today at Computex, the largest computer exhibition in Asia taking place in Taiwan, Steve Guggenheimer, the corporate vice president of the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Division announced both the RTM and the general availability dates for Windows 7.

According to the announcement, Windows 7 will be in stores for the holidays, beginning October 22nd, 2009. In order for this to happen, the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) will be made available to Microsoft partners in the last two weeks of July.

As customers purchase new PCs over the summer and onwards, they will be given the option to participate in the Windows 7 Upgrade Option program. This will be made available to anyone buying a PC with Windows Vista Home Premium and above. At the time of purchase, the PC will run Vista, but when Windows 7 becomes publicly available, they will be given the option to upgrade for either a low cost or free, depending on the manufacturer.

great news...eagerly waiting for RTM.. windows 7 development is really at fast pace with speculation of RC2 signed off already & service pack 1 in development. if these speculations are true then build 7300 might get to be RTMed.

I'm not too surprised for a couple of reasons,

1) The (mostly) very positive feedback and very few issues (even in the early betas),

2) They (MS and their OEM partners) want to cash in on the holiday buying season.

So bring on Oct 22nd. :D

This is great news, and it was a good move to release it in time for the holiday season! I'm not surprised that it will RTM next month either.

Late July to late October... so a 3 month delay between RTM and GA? I wonder if they are being too generous to the OEMs; I mean, the OEMs have had the whole RC period and will have the upcoming escrow period to prepare for deployment, so why is MS giving them 3 months (vs. only a month or so for Vista) and thus missing out on the back-to-school season (which is arguably more important than the winter holiday season)?!

Nice, I'll wait a while though because I might as well wait until the Release Candidate expires so I can get the proper thing after.

Worlds most popular operating system? I thought it was XP at like 60%, then vista at like 20%?

I think it means Windows, not any particular flavour.

RTM for Vista was November 30th wasn't it? At least over here Vista wasn't available in retail stores until the end of January/ early February. I get your point though. Personally I think OEM-installations are utter crap though. If they keep them cleen it shouldn't take them 3 months to find the correct drivers. :p
