E3 2009: I've Played Natal and it Works

Recommended Posts

Still not impressed :/ For user interfaces, it looks amazing.. for any kind of fast paced hardcore gaming, I'd still want to dig out a controller.

Just how fast paced you can move in a game we don't know yet, so that remains to be seen really. But sure a controller isn't gong to go away, not for many many years (not till they can toss us into a full VR game itself anyways).

But if the game is made from the start to use Natal, it can very well be a "hardcore" game.

Can still be used as a gameplay enhancement. How about looking about when playing a shooter. Lying prone in CoD and being able to turn your head left and right to quickly check would be nice. Or in driving games to look out of your wing mirrors or see if anyone is in your blind spots trying to pass.

Great question.. I've been wondering that myself. Also, what happens when you have more then one person in the room.. I'm interested in how well it will recognize other people that might be next to you or when you start waving and your hands cross in front of other people.

I'm sure this has been worked out. Now we need the white papers to leak to figure out the magic behind it all :p

Pass. I play games to relax. Waving my limbs around isn't relaxing. Do it now, underneath your desk. Do it for an hour. Tedious with no resistance isn't it?

you know you can always wear hand/wrist and ankle weights to add resistance and some cardio

One thing I am wondering is how precise is it. Example putting a ball in golf will the camera detect small movements?

I'm excited to see how this impacts the industry. Very cool.

It's not about Hardware, it's ALL about Software!

I want to show you my software.

I wonder if you used a cardboard cutout of someone's face you could trick the auto-login function of Natal. Haha

You can probably fake it if you are really good at making a 3D face, but otherwise, probably not.

It probably have like a 500 point facial recognition, one thing off it won't work...

What does that even mean, the two go hand in hand.

The interview that you posted before just placed an emphasis on the software so much because MS basically bought the hardware off of another company. They want to get through to people that they did actually make an effort with this and not just buy it out.

Hardware is just as important as software.

I'm going to have to agree to some extent here. I mean, motion controllers are one thing, but overall jumping around actively seems tiresome and a bit questionable in a sense. Why play virtual soccer when you could... just... go... outside and do the same? Find friends or people that are interested and have some fun if you're going to get all hot and sweaty jumping around the room...

I'm also a bit concerned about breaking something in my house. From a sports perspective, how would you play something like soccer (using it as it was demo'd) in the house with multiple people? How far can the camera see, and how long before someone gets hurt trying to kick an invisible ball with people around them?

It's bad enough that people are already getting hurt enough as it is using the Wii. With games asking for your whole body movement, and fighting ones at that, I see absolutely nothing but trouble waiting to happen...

Sucks if you get punched in the face:

Anybody know if they are using software from this company ?

http://www.gesturetek.com/3ddepth/introduction.php

Microsoft has licensed Stuff from them before.

If this is true its not as unique asa microsoft states. Sony or nintendo can come in and license it also.

I believe it's a lot more complicated than that.

MS license software from another company and using their OWN abilities to add more to it, rather than just depend on another companies something already designed.

MS can write really great softwares themselves, it's not like license another company and that's it. And, it's unique because of THIS!

And True, Hardware matters, surely this new Camera system is better than the one we have already, but it's still software I think that makes the MAIN difference!

I'm having a feeling that Microsoft is doing NXE 2.0 version that will look like Minority Report feel. Imagine using your hands to flip through NXE and content and use voice to navigate or have a real live person or your avatar you can talk to, that can greet you and discuss new games with you and stuff. That would be unbelievable and it's not really that hard to imagine or do now with Natal.

Ok, why aren't you working for Microsoft again? That is an amazing idea! I hope you are listening Microsoft. Thank you for this great thought. :)

I am very very tempted to purchase this, but I want to see the quality of games that comes out for Natal when it launches. If you could play games like COD:MW2 (very unlikely) I would be purchasing Natal FOR SURE!

I wonder if there are going to be separate games (with a compatibility spot on the back of the box beside Multilayer, Storage Unit etc etc) you would need to buy...

I can imagine the avatar would trigger the same points that Natal is tracking of your face (if it does that), so you could have awesome chat conversations. As for the interview a page or two back that opens the possibility of bringing this to the PC... YES! lol

This is an awesome move by Microsoft, frankly, I'm surprised the consoles are already capable of handling this. I guess we'll have to wait and see for FPS or sports/racing games to see just how much Xbox360 can handle, but I have my hopes up

Awesome. :D

Someone already said earlier, that is in the E3 show video, a woman browses through NXE with her hend gestures and then says play movie when she wants to watch dark knight.

Yup, this looks pretty much exactly like Natel, good find.

It's funny because they actually do use the 360 game covers as if they are browsing NXE :p

Yes, it was the way that the person mentioned combining the ideas that I liked. :) That would be a very good NXE 2.0. Imagine, "Good Morning Dave! Your Gamerscore is 1240! Shall I email your friends to ask them if they want to play a game?" :D lol

I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't let you play Halo today.

Sounds good, but would get reeeeeeeally annoying.

As wonderful as a motion based UI sounds it's still quicker and much for efficient to use a controller.

All I know is, MS better deliver on this Baby!

So many promises, now if they don't deliver anything at least half as accurate as the tech-demos has shown, it would end up really BAD for MS!
