cbrookhart
Everytime I go to the article about the TechNet subscription, it causes IE to lock up. I know that the TechNet was mistakenly given away, but I just wanted to read about this. With 40,000+ views, could it be just the number of people trying to view the article? All other areas of Neowin seem to be working fine. I'm accessing the TechnNet article from the Neowin homepage.
kimsland
I wish that you had provided a link to the latest one that locks up your browser But you may want to try an IE Reset, then restart Internet Explorer (or Firefox) and try again Basically too much stuff automatically adds onto IE, and some of this "stuff" can slow down your browsing too Then restart Internet Explorer
cbrookhart
I wish that you had provided a link to the latest one that locks up your browserBut you may want to try an IE Reset, then restart Internet Explorer (or Firefox) and try again Basically too much stuff automatically adds onto IE, and some of this "stuff" can slow down your browsing too Then restart Internet Explorer Here is the link: https://www.neowin.net/news/software/09/06/...us-subscription I'm thinking the problem has to be either the google ad that's trying to load or the fact that there are currently 400 comments to the article. Every single time I go to that link, the browser locks up (just the one tab) and the CPU usage instantly jumps to 100. I guess it isn't worth reading the comments. Unrelated to this issue, but something else I've noticed when browsing Neowin on a certain computer using IE is that I will have to wait while all the items are loaded. Then, once all the items are loaded, I have to wait while the page gets positioned on the page. It used to happen on every link I clicked on in the forums, but now this only seems to happen when viewing the main page.
kimsland
It took about 1 second to open for me You may want to update to a more secure Hosts file (and effectively quicker browse response) There's lots of important info on that here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm As it's difficult to see the actual download, here it is: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.zip Important! Windows Vista requires special instructions: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm Simply download the hosts.zip file, extract, then run mvps.bat, then restart [important Notice - 2K/XP/Vista Users]In most cases a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) tends to slow down the machine. This only occurs in W2000 and XP. Windows 98 and Windows ME are not affected. To resolve this issue (manually) open the "Services Editor" Start | Run (type) "services.msc" (no quotes) Scroll down to "DNS Client", Right-click and select: Properties Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type" Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart. Then restart, and test browsing the Internet again :)

kimsland
Good point I'm using Firefox: http://www.getfirefox.com But I just tried it on IE7 and its slower to load than Firefox (about 4seconds), then eventually says, "done with errors"
Deacon Frost
Chrome, Fox, and Opera load it pretty quickly :p. It's a good thing to grab too! There's quite a few people I know enjoying it already. Btw: Did you ever think that maybe the problem isn't the site, just the browser? :D. Yes, I suppose it could be your cookies, your cache, your temp files, etc... But... Come on... IE? Honestly now. Growled Member Posted June 6, 2009 Member Share Posted June 6, 2009 IE freezes on that? Heck, Konqueror in Linux even opens that. :p
ceedub
Internet Explorer 8 works fine. Do you use Spybot Search and Destroy? Make sure to clear out the sites it adds to the Restricted Zone list. Empty out the HOSTS file as well. I dont' see the need for those two things anyhow - they are a waste of time, and make the computer run unnecessarily slow. Try opening the site without any addons running as well.
null_
Opens fine for me in Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8 along with Firefox 3.
Raa
Works for me using IE7. Don't blame a browser when you have NFI. If you really must, Google Chrome would be my suggestion. But I happen to like IE more (for now) :p
NEVER85
Works for me using IE7. Don't blame a browser when you have NFI. Speaking from experience? Must be if you think IE is the best browser out there currently. Anyway, TechNet works fine in Firefox and Chrome, which are much better than IE. Raa
I didn't say anything about a browser being better than another. I said it worked in IE7 and I happen to like it more. It's called opinion. It's your opinion that IE is better. And for the record I think Chrome is better than IE, in most areas. I don't believe this is the first time you've misread one of my posts either. It's an opinion to accept proven fact? Just because you prefer IE, doesn't make it better :D. True, just because we prefer anything BUT IE (and safari, in general), doesn't make our browsers better. However, their ability to conform to standards, come out with creative, fantastic features per user suggestions, and develop a browser that better suits web surfing on the hole does make it better. IE just doesn't do that =/. :).
