Xbox Originals to be Retired After Next Game

Recommended Posts

One incoming feature not mentioned at the Microsoft press conference was the Games on Demand service coming in August, which will offer full Xbox 360 games for download. Apparently that service will be replacing Xbox Originals. IGN reports that the company has "finished its portfolio" of Xbox games. One more Original will be released soon, but it will be the last one before Games on Demand starts taking the stage. No word on what the final Original will be, but we have our hopes.

Personally I don't care. You can get the games for way cheaper on disk anyway.

I agree, I much rather get 360 games that I can't find anywhere here in Greece for sale. If I don't have to try and import them from the UK then that helps. Only problem is I'll need the bigger HDD I guess? I'm wondering how it'll actually work really, what with many 360 users still on the smaller 20GB hdd.

Don't understand why when it's a digital service, it's not taking up shelf space and it's not like it's doing any harm MS keeping them online. They'll only make more money from anyone who buys them.

Can't say I've used it though.

^ that's right nobody play original anymore, if they keep it that means they have to support it and it's just not worth the hassel. I agree with them not supporting old game.

I still have lot of game from original xbox that I just can't give away (not that they're worth anything nowadays, but I don't see myself playing them ever.

personally only bought Max Payne from the originals catalog. besides, jianbing's being a bit misleading, i get from the excerpt that this will be the last Original release, not that they will be removed from the marketplace.

That's what I got from it too. It doesn't make much sense to put a new Original up there and then remove it just a couple short months later. :/

I just used the title of the original article :p. But it does say this:

Are we still going to be able to get Xbox originals from this Games on Demand serive? I would hope so, but it doesn't say. From the tone and title of the article, it would seem whoever wrote it is under the impression that Xbox Originals will be gone alltogether though.

I think they're just going to retire the originals branding to reduce confusion with their new full retail game download branding.

My understanding is that the new system is going to be priced in actual monetary amounts as well instead of spacebucks, so we should hopefully see some price drops in those older catalog titles on the system. 1200 spacebucks was a little expensive for some of those older titles.

More people would have bought these if they had bothered to implement achievements.

And lowered the price, and improved compatability, and put some decent games on there!

One of the games I would have loved to see on there was Phantom Crash. That's one of my favourite games ever; if they'd put that up with Xbox Live multiplayer, I would have bought it in an instant.

Come on Jordan, Max Payne and BLACK not decent games? Rob's right tho, achievements would have made a huge difference, but also require re-programming.

so we're probably in agreement the originals will be integrated into the On Demand thing, after all they don't have any reason to just remove them.

No, they're not decent. Max Payne's controls are about the same level as GTA and I'm not a fan of the plot. And BLACK is just a glorified run-and-gun game.

Sorry, but I find it hard to find a game that I really really like nowadays (outside of Guitar Hero and Rock Band :p ). And most of the games I do like are ones that aren't too successful so if they have online multiplayer, I won't be able to play it because no bugger's online. Like FlatOut Ultimate Carnage. I used to be in a little site where we organised events for various games and just had fun, and FlatOut was one of them; probably our second most popular event behind CoD4. Ahh, those were the days. :(

I loved both, more for the story telling than gameplay though. But the gameplay was fine as well, but I played on the PC so maybe that's why?

Since the future 360 on-demand game d/ls will be much like the xbox original ones, do they let you buy once and red/l it later if you need to?

I have to guess they do, much like with XBLA games, since if you keep buying games and other stuff, even the 120GB will fill up pretty fast.

That's what I wanted to know. There's only one xbox original I might have trouble finding. I forget the name but its like this action adventure game you play this hot looking brunette w/ a pink shirt.

It may not be taking up much space, but Microsoft may think it makes things too cluttered. And if a service simply isn't performing, why would you bother to keep it when there isn't any additional content (read: new games) planned?

They could just reorganise the existing originals so that they get sold alongside the new 360 titles perhaps. Makes sense to me. I'm sure having things like the original Halo made available for digital download still makes sense.
