[6/9/09] Prototype

It's a port. Very little control over the graphics.

If you have the hardware the PC version is notably sharper, especially if you kick the AA up a couple notches. Textures on the ground and buildings look beautiful in the PC version.

Game runs great full settings on my pc (X2 5600+, 4 gb ram, 9600gt) but the graphics are pretty crappy to be honest.

It's a fun game though I like the combat a lot.

Think I'll pass on this game for now, just got my freeroaming superhero fix with inFAMOUS and I just started out on the massive task of completing Fallout 3 so I'm set for now. Plus, it doesn't really look that good imo.

Went to my neighbor's house and watched him play it for a few minutes. Looks fun, but doesn't appear to be anything grand. Flying through the city reminded me of going through it in the first Transformers game. A game this new and yet visually it didn't seem that polished, but still looks fun.

Looking forward to trying this when I'm home.

I've seen a few people say "spiderman without web swinging" and "Hulk" though...

Mixed bag of reviews also, Gamereactor gave it a bit of a beating at 5/10 - http://translate.google.dk/translate?u=htt...da&ie=UTF-8

Thoughts from you guys?

It's, ummm, okay.

I am not that far into it, only did the first three or four missions, and right now I am just not overly impressed.

It does look good visually, I like the recreation of NYC, and it runs great as well on my PC, completely maxed out @ 1900 x 1280, 2x AA, Shadows and Graphics set to High, and I enabled VSync and it runs pretty much at a steady 60fps. With VSynce off I saw it get past 100 in the less demanding areas graphically. I have also seen it dip to around 45 with a lot going on. So it runs good enough on my PC (also I always run FRAPS when I first play a game to tweak it to best settings in case your wondering why I know the numbers so easily).

But coming from inFamous, just not overly impressed with the controls right now (I am using a 360 controller). Holding RT to just run up walls feels pretty cheap to me. You can really just hold down RT and keep running up and down buildings and never have to really platform as far as I can see. And the fighting is just real chaotic with no real sense of achieving anything other than bashing buttons. It has some potentially cool aspects to it, such as the whole consuming people and getting memories and having to go "stealth" and what not, so I am not writing it off just yet, but after about 30-40 minutes of playing it, it does kind of feel like a Spiderman / Hulk hybrid so far.

Just to give an idea graphically...

Realize it does not look all the impressive on a snapshot and looks much better in action.

Also definitely does dip below 60 once things are going on, but I can take 50-ish FPS @ 1900x1280

Just played the game for a good 30 minutes, sound side is a bit crude and the graphics aren't that impressive, plus the Story is a bit thin ... But the game is epic fun, screw all that Hollywood story crap and evolving characters, this is just pure massacre and fun (Y)

hmmm, just played it and was kinda unimpressed. When playing it on a pc you can tell it was made for consoles, as the graphics don't stand up imo (yeah there's a lot going one, but it just doesn't look polished...).

i'll give it a bit longer though and see if it grows on me. oh, and like DirtyLarry said, the fights are rediculously chaotic, and i just end up chasing the target(s) and button bashing. it's really difficult (nay, impossible?) to be precise.

but as i say, i'll see how it grows on me.

Which is what games are supposed to be all about :D

@DL, Prototype doesn't really need to run at 60FPS. It's not necessary like it would be for a racing sim. I don't even think GTA4 did 60FPS.

I wish this had a demo. With such mixed things I'm hearing, I really can't justify spending any money on it without trying it first :/

I don't use GameFly... I suppose I could rent it though. I might have to do that.

IMHO, it is a rental all the way. For sure.

DL, what kind of computer are you running it on? I hope to have the game by tomorrow or today, just depends on when I can get to the store.

I really should know my specs off hand but I do not. LOL

Copy and pasted from my old signature...

Intel Core i7 920

Corsair Dominator (3 x 2GB) DDR3 1600

EVGA LGA 1366 Intel X58

XFX GTX 285 1GB

Xi-Fi Platinum Fatality

Thanks sounds like I should be able to do it justice in 1920x1080 as well.

Not sure why people are being so hard on the game, it got 7/10 just like inFamous did from one of the hardest-to-please websites over this side of the pond.

Maybe it doesn't have the exclusive tag or big budget, but it's definitely a good game. If you want good old fashioned sand box fun then Prototype even gives Crackdown a run for its money imo.

I guess it just goes to show different strokes for different folks.

As I can easily flip this statement around and say the same thing about inFamous, as I cannot see how people could not say that is not a good game either. It does kind of go both ways, hence why I say sometimes it is just a matter of opinion.

But TBH my biggest gripe with Prototype so far as I really thought holding down RT to run up and over anything just presents no challenge at all with getting to the top of things. Perhaps it gets more challening and difficult later on, but one of the things I liked so much about Crackdown and / or Infamous is when you got to the top of something really high, you had to "work" at doing so. So unless it changes in Prototype, it appears all I have to do is hold down RT and get up wherever I want???

I hope it does change, and there is more of a plat-forming element, but that is my initial impression of it, and why I think Crackdown and Infamous do hold so much charm to me, it is not so easy to get to the top of every building.
