soumyasch
Haali Media Splitter + CoreAVC works great. You may also want to try the DivX MKV Splitter Tech Preview which supposedly allows the native H.264 decoder to decode the H.264 content inside the MKV files. CrashG
You need the Matroska codec. Get the CCCP codec pack here: http://www.cccp-project.net/.

ObiWanToby
In Windows 7, you only need a splitter. Haali Media Splitter works well. Although as pointed out above, http://labs.divx.com/mkvwin7preview looks really neat.
Gabe3
anything that will let me play the files inside wmp? with vista I used "VistaCodecs" by shark
limok
All you need is haali media splitter, make sure on installation you uncheck all checkboxes for best compatibility. Google mkv association for wmp and you'll find a registry file that allow mkv's to be added to library
ObiWanToby
anything that will let me play the files inside wmp? with vista I used "VistaCodecs" by shark Yes my solutions, as suggested by others in this thread and imok will allow such a thing. Download Haali Media Splitter... then open the mkv in WMP and it should work.

iamwhoiam
Google mkv association for wmp and you'll find a registry file that allow mkv's to be added to library Why? Just open the file with wmp and tell it to always open that file type. Simpler than looking around Google for reg entries.
drlacus
Is there a way to change the pictures in the thumbnails ? I mean the time it uses for snapshots. 'Cause all I see is only black or white boxes.
Hani
i don't think that's possible, unless you use some kind of software to edit these videos (remove the first couple of seconds).
br0adband
To play an MKV file in Windows 7 you need one single thing: Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (the proper version, meaning x86 for x86, x64 for x64). That's it, nothing else is required. I've got 2500+ MKV files from tiny ones to super-huge ones, stereo ones to AC3 ones, and everything in between, and on Windows 7 x64 the only thing I have installed to play them all without a single issue whatsoever is Media Player Classic - Home Cinema x64. One single .exe file, and that's it. That's it, nothing else is required. Anyone that tells you otherwise hasn't got a clue. No more codecs, no CoreAVC, no splitters, nothing else is required. You can't change the transparent thumbnails, it's a bug with haali splitter. You could clear the thumbnail cache and recreate the thumbnails but transparent thumbnails will still be detected. If you want a better solution for mkv thumbnails then use the DivX Tech Preview (thumbnails only for 32bit explorer). You are correct but if you re-read what the original poster requested you'll find he wanted to play the mkv's in windows media player. Why? Just open the file with wmp and tell it to always open that file type. Simpler than looking around Google for reg entries. This will allow windows media player to automatically scan media folders and include mkv as a known media type and add it into the videos library just as it would for mp4, wmv etc.

George P Global Moderator Posted June 6, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted June 6, 2009 So you still need to edit the registry to get WMP12 to add mkv files into your videos library correctly? Why can't MS just add in the reg type from the get go? I seriously don't get why, specially when it's nothing complex really.
Preppy Veteran Posted June 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 6, 2009 How is MS supposed to know in advance what any given file type is, and test against this registration, vs not registering for stuff you don't currently support... ? Given your idea, out of box MKV 'adds to the library correctly' but then doesn't play out of box (no splitter) which is just a terrible experience. :) So yeah, not complex, just a bad plan when it comes down to it. :)
bob21
The simplest and most stress free way to deal with MKV is to liberate your collection of this rubbish container . Download this and mux (Only takes a few seconds) your mkv's to mpeg which can be played back on pretty much any device.

MKV is the standard for high definition video on the internet.
bob21
It places completely unnecessary restrictions on what device can playback the files (NO Portable Media Player/PDA/PDA Phone/DVD Player/Network Streamer fully supports it) so its pretty much PC only . And even then its horribly supported on windows (see the posts above) and if you do find a device capable of playing MKV (TwonkyVision) weather the file will playback is more miss than hit with audo-sync issues forced subtitles. All of the above can be avoided by taking the contents and putting them inside the mpeg container which achieves the exact same results in seconds with none of the issues above . So yes it is by any definition of the word utter crap and weather you like it or not people are going to be told that they have a way to liberate their collections of this rubbish container and playback they're files on whatever device they want to . http://www.videohelp.com/download/mkv2vob2451.exe Edited June 6, 2009 by bob21

Pikey
I think I agree with +bob21 on this one! .. it may well be a great for some people for high definition, but if it's not supported much?
