AJR1
Just been watching some stage demo's of this game from E3 and it looks outstanding. Anyone here at Neowin play the current Supreme Commander and the expansion pack Forged Alliance? Anyone else looking forward to SupCom2?
ObiWanToby
Whoa stage demos of SupCom 2? I am looking forward to it. Sadly SupCom suffered major performance issues, even with a quad core. It is not fun to play when you are forced to have smaller battles. We need more good strategy games. I hope this game is not being developed cross platform... I think that simplifies games too much. I hope it is made on the PC then ported to Xbox.

I know there are issues with it, i've found playing with more people who have at minimum a dual core does help.
ObiWanToby
It does look neat, it will just take a while for it to come out. I wish I could just fix the performance in the old one. It really takes away from the game :(

chrismaddern
What the hell are you running... I had to clock my QUad core to 4GHz before it ran perfectly along with two 8800GTXs *Jealous :p*
LingeringSoul
That stage demo actually looked pretty sweet. The physics on each of the individual units were pretty cool (the destruction animations didn't look prescripted at all). I enjoyed the original Supreme Commander, along with the Forged Alliance expansion, but unfortunately I had a pretty crappy gaming machine back then. Perhaps I should fire those games back up now that I have a quad core processor and a 9800. I've always been a sucker for real-time strategy games (even though I'm awful at them), so I'll be watching this one for sure.
Moustacha
If they're going to do the same thing with the simulation they need to make it run better, and scale over multiple cores. Cause even if you had a quad core, one core is being thrashed by the simulation and the rest are relatively idle. That's where the slow down happens. Vice
I loved the original game the sheer epic size of it. I can't wait for a sequel. If there is but one request it would be ... make this one run correctly. Even with the most expensive hardware on the market at the time of the games release (QX6700 the only Quad Core on the market coupled with the fastest GPU available at the time the 8800GTX) it ran modestly. Sure you could run it at 2560x1600 with all the graphics on high but if you looked at a part of the map with lots of units the game became barely playable. The scale of this game is meant for thousands of units but they didn't do enough testing in my opinion if your game doesn't run how its supposed to on the fastest hardware available where money is no object then you have problems. The director of the game has come out and said that is a key area they have focused and are aiming to have this game run on hardware from 3 to 5 years ago. Other issues I had with the original game: Even though I had a 64-bit System with 8GB of fast RAM the game would never utilise more then 3GB, and it would crash with errors such as 'out of memory' ITS THERE. USE IT. (64-bit system). I'm so excited for this sequel, supreme commander makes even the latest C&C look like an RTS from 1995.
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted June 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2009 I have Supreme Commander and the only thing I didn't like about it was the performance issues. It's as if the game was meant to bring the most powerful rigs to their knees. Unfortunately, it was the performance issues that turned me off from buying the expansion. I hope they address the performance issues in Supreme Commander 2. Judging from the stage demo, it seems as though it's a major priority. All in all, I look forward to this game. ToneKnee
Still doesn't capture the magic that was Total Annihilation. TA with some of todays mods adds loads of units, and I mean loads. I want a game where I can have lots of different types of tanks and so on, and make it "large scale" by doing so.

Andre S. Veteran Posted June 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2009 PC Gamer has a nice interview with Chris Taylor and screenshots in the July issue (no 189). It looks like the game will have less economic micro-management, less different units but each one of them more significant, and of course better visuals. They are targeting 2010 for the release. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted June 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 7, 2009 Cool. 2010 isn't too far away. Chris Taylor said, in the E3 09 stage demo, that the game will have a tech trees instead of tech levels. Basically, you'll be spending resources on research points to expand your tech trees (land, air, naval, structures, & commander).

That could very well mean Christmas 2010. And there's no guarantee that it'll actually come out in 2010, it's just what they're currently targeting. bolerodan
Nice, Im looking forward to this. I myself have never had any HUGE performance issues, but once in a while I would have a tad bit lag but it would never last.
