+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted June 9, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted June 9, 2009 OK, I am new to Mac's, but need to work on them in my new job... I am looking for a text-editor for editing PHP (and whatever other scripts). My source code is stored on a running virtual machine. I connect to this via ExpanDrive, so it is seen as a local drive. I would like: Line numbering down left margin Code highlighting Autocomplete (not a major need) Integrated file browser Tabbed interface I have been using Homesite on the PC for years (I know it's old but I like it). Looking for something similar. Tried TextMate - but it refreshes the folder tree on focus, which means a wait between ever app switch... What can you suggest? TonyLock
TwistPad is the best editor I've seen, light weight, super fast, super versatile and does multiple development languages: http://www.carthagosoft.net/twistpad/index.htm

Trphor
Maybe NetBeans will do what you want it to. Far as I know (I could be wrong) there is now PHP support.

boogerjones
I have tried Komodo, Netbeans, BBEdit, Aptana, and Zend Studio. Zend Studio is hands-down the best one, IMO. But for some ridiculous reason, it costs $400.

jamend
I've been using Eclipse PDT at home (Vista) and at work (Leopard), and I love it. It has all the features you mentioned, plus a few more like debugger support, PHPDoc, auto code formatting, opening and editing the same file in multiple open views, multiple windows with the same workspace, collecting all of your TODO/HACK/XXX/FIXME's in a nice task list, and comparing files (sort of like diff). There are also lots of useful plugins for Eclipse, like FTP, SSH, CVS/SVN, database browsing, etc... I'd say the only downside is the learning curve :p

MrChainsaw
TextMate is good, but it isn't free, so try NetBeans.
