Omen1393
Currently I'm running Windows 7 RC 64 Bit and I'm quite pleased with it. I'm also thinking about getting 4 more gigs of RAM to get a total of 8 gigs so I can take advantage of it all when Windows 7 comes out. My question is will I be able to buy an upgrade version of windows 7 and install the 64-bit version fresh if I only have a 32-bit version of Vista? My PC is a dell so it just came with one OEM vista 32-bit disc.
zulugod
I doubt it but never tried.
MR_Candyman
it would depend on how they package the discs, as to whether or not it will allow a full installation and not just an upgrade
Raa
You'll be fine. (Y)
null_
You'll most likely need to perform a clean installation. At this point, nobody knows what will happen with the upgrade discs, as to whether or not you'll need a previous version of Windows currently installed in order to go through with the setup process, or if we'll be able to enter a qualifying product key to enable the upgrade. Argi
AFAIK you can't upgrade between 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
Pam14160
It is too early to start worrying about it; when the time comes you will know what to do prior to purchasing a copy of the upgrade, or the full box version. For now just sat back and enjoy Se7en until you really have to install a store bought copy. :)
+Warwagon MVC Posted June 10, 2009 MVC Share Posted June 10, 2009 Well I know idiots who bought Windows Vista home premium 64bit with 4 gigs of ram then downgraded it to Vista ultimate 32 bit. It was because their business required it. I'm like... uhhh...... why not just by a computer that comes with ultimate 32. So I'm guessing if you can go from 64 to 32 you can go 32 to 64. shockz
You should be able to buy an upgrade disc, and use the "clean install" option. The upgrade disc will see that you have Vista, and will allow you to proceed with the clean install option. The actual upgrade option in the installer won't work as the installer will not allow you to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit.
Omen1393
So now that the upgrade versions have been announced and are on sale, is it possible to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7 with the upgrade copy as long as I do a clean install?
