veritas310
I'm going to go back and watch the part of the keynote where they discuss Safari 4, but didn't they say that Safari won't crash like other browsers? They claimed that it will just shut down the plug-in/add-on if this happens, rather than crashing the browser? I've had Safari 4 on my Mac OS X 10.5.7 for two days and it's crashed 3 times? Comeon now, I rarely have FireFox quit on me, ever. Also, not sure what came first or if it even matters but I was using the Opera beta a few weeks ago, Speed Dial seems almost identical to Top Sites? Bottom line, Safari 4 hasn't been very stable for me thus far, anyone else want to weigh in?
Imran Hussain
I've used it on Windows, and I've been unimpressed so far. I liked Safari 3, but 4 seems just bloated. It's not as fast enough to work around with as Chrome or Firefox, and it hogs a lot of memory too. Crashes aren't rare either. It is fast in rendering websites, but then so is Chrome. What was Apple thinking?! After Safari 3, I expected much more.

veritas310
Only on Snow Leopard. Well now I really need to watch it (currently downloading), why would it have any dependence on Snow Leopard? The browser itself blocks plug-ins/add-ons...
suspiria
Initially after installing the final Safari 4, it was crashing and just being slow. After using the "Reset Safari..." command in the Safari menu and deleting my preferences it's been running wonderfully. Safari 4 has been a pleasant surprise for me... I agree i wasn't a fan of safari 4 in beta, however i let Mac OSX perform the software update when they came in and so far ive been really impressed, much much faster and very stable when opening multiple pages at once,. PyX
Only on Snow Leopard. I was about to say it. Yes, it's going to make full use of the latest Snow Leopard's built-in technologies.
Timan Veteran Posted June 10, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 10, 2009 I'll just deal with it, but it seems to be crashing more often than the beta for me. Resetting safari helps, but i'm not sure what it is exactly thats causing it.
Hell-In-A-Handbasket
same thing happened with me a while ago back during Beta, started after i installed MS Silverlight for Netflix, briefly fixed it when i removed silverlight, but it came back, had to remove silverlight and do what you did. 9UnknownMen
They should rename it to "Safari (Not Responding)". I though it would be decent on OSX at least but it froze up immedaitely. I had to disable Flash and Flip4Mac which I was told was problematic.
Miuku.
I'd pay good money to be able to disable the Top Sites functionality completely - it seems to be causing massive CPU spikes.
veritas310
Resetting may help...but why would I even need to do that two days into use? If this continues, I'll be sure to go back to FireFox for my primary use. It does look great, especially Top Sites, but that takes a back-seat to stability. I think FireFox has crashed on me three times in the last 2 years, Safari has managed to accomplish that feat in two days :).

Miuku.
Safari>Preferences>General: New Windows open with: Home PageNew tabs open with: Empty Page Nah, it's still generating the previews in the background - still causes the same spikes every now and then. There was a hack for Beta that allowed disabling the Top Sites completely that fixed the issue for me. There also seems to be an issue where browsing sites with lots of gif animations completely freezes the browser - some image repositories and "funny" sites choke completely. (This is a brand spanking new Leo install with absolutely no addons, nothing except 10.5.7 + S4) - Firefox does not suffer from this nor Opera. I guess it's back to Firefox. Blaine
I am so confused, why are the tabs in the final release back to normal? They were at the very top on the betas, and I am a little confused :s

It seems like Apple took away the top bar hacks even though the files still exist in the Resources folder - also disabling Top Sites seems to have gone the way of the dodo, hopefully they'll return the abilities in a future patch. Actually I liked them - using them allowed to customize the browser better for a tablet or small screen interface.
Calum Veteran Posted June 11, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 11, 2009 I am so confused, why are the tabs in the final release back to normal? They were at the very top on the betas, and I am a little confused :s If a major UI change, from beta software, returns back to the old behavour, it's normally either because of usability issues or performance issues. With Safari 4, it was usability issues. No matter how much some of us, including me, found it very easy to use, beautiful and had no problems at all, some users would. Therefore, I wish they gave it us as an option. Because tabs in the menu bar were a UI nightmare. Thank God their back to normal. The tabs were in the title bar, not the menu bar. If they were in the menu bar then it would be a UI nightmare :D It may be a UI nightmare to you, but it isn't to me. I thought it was more efficient as it gave us more vertical space for the part of the browser where webpages were shown. Not only that, but it looked really nice, especially in the glass title bar when using Windows.

I'm assuming that was sarcasm? ;) (I honestly can't tell). Crashed again today. *clicks open FireFox and continues on as normal. Hmm, interesting - it's never crashed for me. Firefox, on the other hand, crashed a few times since using it as my default browser. I've been using Safari 4 as my default browser, since release, now they've optimised it for Windows and I couldn't be more happier.
