Safari 4?

Recommended Posts

I really enjoyed Safari 3 on Windows XP but used Firefox primarily on Vista. I tried Safari 4 Beta on Vista but uninstalled it after a day. I'm now using Safari 4 and enjoying it. It seems more polished than the beta, hasn't crashed yet, and seems quicker without any lag on top sites that I experienced with the beta.

If a major UI change, from beta software, returns back to the old behavour, it's normally either because of usability issues or performance issues. With Safari 4, it was usability issues. No matter how much some of us, including me, found it very easy to use, beautiful and had no problems at all, some users would. Therefore, I wish they gave it us as an option.

The tabs were in the title bar, not the menu bar. If they were in the menu bar then it would be a UI nightmare :D It may be a UI nightmare to you, but it isn't to me. I thought it was more efficient as it gave us more vertical space for the part of the browser where webpages were shown. Not only that, but it looked really nice, especially in the glass title bar when using Windows.

I meant title bar. :p Though I think it looked bloody awful on Windows Vista/7 having more than one tab with all the glass and transparency.

I've been using Safari 4.0 since its release. It has since replaced Firefox as default browser on my Mac. Why? Faster than Firefox 3.5 beta, better integration into the OS.

As to the tabs: They make more sense in their traditional location than in the title bar. Too many times I ended up moving the window rather than switching to the tab I was aiming for.

I guess it's just me. I'm using it on my MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.7, 4GB RAM, 2.53Ghz C2D, and it has crashed a few times on me. I've noticed it seems to do it when there's JavaScript on the page, which doesn't happen for me in FireFox. I'm not trying to at all bash Safari, I think it looks amazing and aside from the few crashes, has been a fantastic browser.

I kept on doing that to, did me head in. I switched to FF 3.5 while Safari was in beta and kept it as my default browser but the GM build of Safari 4 is awesome and now I've switched back. :D

Firefox 3.5 has HUGE errors too, which froze up my whole machine...., then again, it was Beta, so... meh...

But Safari is really really fast, its such a shame that it crashes..., last night it crashed 4 times in a Row, i cant help but wonder if its something with specific webpages instead of a general issue...

And the lack of tab saving/restoring is kinda annoying too...

They should rename it to "Safari (Not Responding)". I though it would be decent on OSX at least but it froze up immedaitely. I had to disable Flash and Flip4Mac which I was told was problematic.

This is exactly what was said in the keynote. OS X is very stable, but yes it can crash, and the fault is mainly attributed to plug-ins (or beta versions :p)
