Arkanius
Hello everyone I'm an Engineering student with a Mac, which is very common in my Uni, but sometimes we have to run Parallels/VMWare to run some applications which are not Mac supported Anyway, my MacBook (Black version) currently runs on 2GB. Most of the times it's good but I get sometimes the beach balls when running lot's of stuff in parallel (Sometimes I run Windows and Linux at the same time in Parallels, so that means, running 3 OSs at the same time) Now Snow Leopard is almost ready, and since it's fully 64 bit, it will use a bit of more memory right? So the question is, should I upgrade to 4 GB? I can get a pair of OCZ notebook memory (667 Mhz since it can't run 800 MHz) for 50$
PL_ Veteran Posted June 11, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 11, 2009 I'm interested in doing this too (on the same model). My main motivation is for a performance boost in Photoshop, iPhoto and iMovie. My only concern is the horror stories about bad RAM causing kernel panics and other weirdness. My only concern is the horror stories about bad RAM causing kernel panics and other weirdness. Never heard of such problems. The only thing I heard is that 800 mhz memory won't work on the older Macbooks because EFI won't "underclock" the memories to 667 speeds. Are those problems common or just urban legends? Urban legend far as im concerned, the problem is going over 5gb
Arkanius
I'm still undecided on wether or not it will be a good upgrade. Sway me people :)
Astra.Xtreme
I'd say go for it. The more RAM, the better. Check more into the "issue" with the EFI. I'm not convinced that it's really true, but I could be wrong. Buy the new, sell the old, and it should be a pretty inexpensive upgrade. :D
ynnoj
I put a 2GB Crucial stick in my late 2007 MacBook last month and I've experienced no issues whatsoever. The speed increases across the board are definitely noticeable. I'll be buying another stick once I have some cash to spare.
dolby71
I have the mid-2008 blackbook and i upgraded my memory from 2gb to 4gb (667mhz) and it's wonderful. VMware runs much better, so does Photoshop and etc... dunno about the 800mhz part...
Reimroc
I don't have a BlackBook, but I have trusted OWC for my iMacs. I never had problems whatsoever.
