Consequences for running without a key/activation?

Recommended Posts

Let's say I had a way to get RTM, when it came out, but I couldn't get a key until it was released to the public. What kind of restrictions would I run into if I were to run RTM without a key for a few months? Does the OS shut down, won't install in the first place, restarts, etc? Have they stated this?

I want to get running RTM right away but MSDNAA for me didn't get Vista keys until consumer release, and this will probably be the case for Win 7 all over again :(

There are ways to "extend" the activation period, but I'm not going to discuss that with you, I recommend doing a little research. But worse case thing will happen is that your system will be completely unusable until a key is entered/activated. And even if you did get a key, that keys need to be activated or Windows will stay locked down.

well shutting down my computer isnt exactly an acceptable scenario. if its just going to nag me, i can handle nags for a couple months until i am allowed to buy a copy.

i realize there will be seedy ways to have win7 and never buy it or get legit, and while i used to do that, i find its 100% less hassle to just buy it and get automatic worry free updates without hacking about in the OS. Sadly MS isn't giving much of a choice by limiting who can legitimately get RTM. :/

I WANT TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY MS! JUST LET ME!

You can reset the 30 days 3 times using built in functions. No hacks or cracks required. Hopefully MSDN:AA will get their keys fast. :D

120-day extension:

Vista & Windows 7: http://windowssecrets.com/comp/070215/#story1

Basically just run a command prompt with Admin privilidges and run this command: slmgr -rearm

XP: http://www.techspot.com/vb/post662978-10.html

Basically just run from Safe mode, Administrator account: rundll32.exe syssetup,SetupOobeBnk

Hope this helps :)

Edit:

Oh don't do this on an all ready activated Windows, as it may de-activate it
