360 Dying?

Recommended Posts

I've been playing Sacred 2 Fallen Angels, and the game has been freezing a lot lately. I'll play maybe a few minutes and then it'll freeze. Today I got the dreaded RRoD. However, after restarting a few times, it went away. I tried to play a little more, the 360 kept freezing, and then the RRoD came back. I tried restarting again and it went away. However, if I try to play any games, the games will simply freeze.

Does this mean my 360 is basically dead? I still have a month left in my 1 year warranty thankfully so I have time to send it in. Just wondering if I can send it in even though the RRoD doesn't seem to be permanent yet?

3 yr warranty for RROD (3 red rings) generally caused by overheating or hardware failure.

I know how you feel my friend, mine died 2 days ago from RROD and the thing that makes me mad is that im over the 3 yr warranty for RROD, that and my console has been opened a few times so it would have voided the warranty anyway. But yea, if its still under warranty just send it back to MS and they will fix it.

Can I request a repair even though the RRoD isn't permanent yet?

Also I saw that for RRoD I get 3 years, for other console issues only 1 year.

If it RROD'd once its going to do it again, just call the xbox support number and tell them what's happening and i can guarantee you they will tell you to send it to them.

No, I'm pretty sure it's not the jasper model. Not sure how to tell, but the manufacture date is 4/22/2008 which I believe to be before Jasper's were released.

Do that, except don't bother with the Arctic Silver (unless you have some laying around). Just peel the top off of the thermal tape that was on the chips, making it double sided, and use that to attach the pennies. Worked perfectly for me and it will only take you about 20-25 mins to do. If that doesn't work, you can always try the xclamp mod.

Well, I sent in my 360 today. What's a typical wait time before I'm able to get it back. Also the 360 they send back, would it be a Jasper model or an old refurb?

2 or 3 weeks from what I have had at least

it seems once they get yours they might just send you a diffrent one thats what they did for me

It'd be nice if they sent me a new Jasper model, though wouldn't I need a different power supply if they did?

I really doubt you'll get a Jasper. Most likely you'll be getting someone else's refurb with a fancy new heatsink inside. If by some miracle you do get a jasper, your power supply would work. If I'm not mistaken xephyr/falcon psu's will work on the jasper but not vice versa.

You will get back whatever you sent it. By that MFG date i am guessing you got a falcon chipset which is 65nm CPU and 90nm GPU.

Falcon's are sort of reliable but the problem has always been the GPU. The Jasper chipset which has the GPU at 65nm will greatly reduce RROD.

The initial Xenon models would of been fine if they designed a better mounting method for the clamps.

like others said its unlikely you'll get a jasper, but I just wanted to add that no you wont need a new PSU, they are "forwards" compatable.

  • 2 weeks later...

heh took 4 days to get to MS, then repaired in 1 day, now it's being shipped back. looking at a 2 week turnaround time with most of the time spent shipping.

so, what do they actually do, peal the paste and heatsink off, clean them and reattach better ones ... or a mobo upgrade? ....

Actually, I believe they pull everything inside the case and replace it. Not necessarily with the exact same parts either. I sent mine in a couple months ago for my first RROD. I didn't report to them a DVD drive issue I had (it would stick closed somewhat often and I had to toy with it to get it open) and that was fixed. It also runs much much quieter than my previous box, and I never had a problem with the noise, so the fact that I actually noticed the reduction is impressive. Same deal as this - the box only spent probably part of a day at the MS warehouse. All of the rest of the time was spent shipping the thing. There's no way they actually spend time repairing them immediately. It seems more likely they just replace all the innards, and then check to see which parts from your box they can salvage to put in other people's boxes.

i think with all the the press around the RROD, that Microsoft had to do a good job of repairing the 360s sent in. If not, they wouldn't hear the end of it.

I think my 360 may be about to die, for a couple of months now it's always hanging on the dashboard, y'know like the old pre NXE dash used to hang? Well when they released NXE it stopped hanging, worked seamlessly for me, past couple of months feel like I'm back on the OXE :(
