I'm gonna go with Vista x64. I run it as my main OS, and it runs games just fine. Plus it's a requirement if you care about DX10 features at all.

This. Especially considering you have 6 GB of RAM.

XP (not x64) if you don't worry about DX10. Also remember you'll limit your ram to ~3.3gb

Windows 7 x64 if you do. Even the RC is stable as, so i'd go with that for everything thesedays!

Good point Napalm Frog, I overlooked the amount of ram. If you have 6GB of ram, and you want to be able to "use" it, you "have" to use a 64 bit operating system. Vista x64 is going to be your best choice (actually like Raa said, Windows 7 x64 would be even better, but it's not out yet). Keep that in mind. XP x64 has very poor support, so that would not be a good choice for a gaming machine.

Use Vista x64 until Windows 7 get released (and supported by anti-cheat/DRM etc...).

Win XP is faster in some way, but you loose 2.5GB of your RAM and you don't have Dx10.

Win XP 64Bit, if it could have any use, is "NOT" for gaming.

Vista 32 have nothing better than Vista x64 except 2.5GB lacking.

After running XP back in the day (when it was the latest OS from Microsoft), Vista (x64) and Windows 7 (x64) I personally think that if you have a modern system (preferably quad-core, but dual should be fine) with 4+ GB of ram and a decent graphics card, the performance gain XP would offer is not great enough to balance the loss of features that Vista and Windows 7 have over XP.

Now, if your running a low-end dual-core with 2GB of ram and a graphics card thats a few generations old, then stick with XP.

Currently, it's Windows Vista x64 with SP2. In the near future, it'll be Windows 7 x64.

Vista x64 SP2. It gives you the latest technology, and don't you want that in a gaming rig?

XP x64 in second place, provided there are XP x64/Server 2003 drivers available for your hardware.

The 32-bit OSes aren't worth considering when you have 6GB of RAM.

Windows Vista 64-bit! DEFINATLY! I use it with 6GB and i love it, extremely fast! plays games very, very well.

Windows 7 if you don't play punkbuster games otherwise you will get an api error.

the simple answer would be Windows because there are an incredible amount more games than for any other OS, and yes Vista x64 or Win7 x64 for your specific system

Windows Vista 64-bit with Service Pack 2, hands down. Once Windows 7 is released and the drivers for it have completely matured, then it will definitely be Windows 7 64-bit. There's no need to run a 32-bit operating system if you have 2 GB or more of RAM and a 64-bit capable processor (any incompatible applications can be run in a Virtual PC).

I would say Windows Vista x64 or Windows 7 x64 ....

If you don't have them now. You should wait till Oct 22, 2009.

That's when Microsoft releases their new OS ... You should

be able to pick it up at your local e-tailor when it's release.

Windows 7 RC 32bit for me - GTA4 runs much smoother than in Vista.

Windows 7 RC plays all the games except Counter Strike Source :(

that is, on intel GMA X3000 :p

Win XP 64Bit, if it could have any use, is "NOT" for gaming.

I've been using XP x64 since it came out in 2005, and it's always been rock solid as far as my gaming experience goes.

With Vista being more restrictive than XP (registry/file system access, running everything as a restricted user, etc), I'd argue that you have better chances of having older games fail on Vista (either one of them) than XP x64...

I'm not necessarily suggesting that XP x64 should be everyone's first choice--I just object to your sweeping statement.
