qdave
Yep, Win 7 uses ram more efficiently than Vista did, which is an awesome thing :)

This is actually a bad thing. Too much of the RAM is "free". It's better when the "free" RAM is near zero and that same number is in the "Cached" category. Interesting, on a macbook (white 13" version) with 2gb of ram installed im getting 996mb of usage from boot up time and I have aero off
MagicAndre1981
@lalovista your screenshot says you have a slow Windows7 ;) You are wasting your RAM by leaving it free. If you don't want to have a fast Windows7 only use 1 GB of RAM and throw the 2nd GB away :argh:

a1ien
I was expecting them to include a series of Princess Leia slavegirl wallpapers. So clearly there is room for improvement.
br0adband
Sadly, people just continue to remain ignorant of how Vista and Windows 7 are designed to operate. 355MB after a clean installation with no software installed and nothing having been done with the machine is fine, but if you're still showing 355MB in use after a few days or weeks of usage, you must not use the machine much because Superfetch doesn't seem to be using much. Could be one of those average Joe "browser only email type" people that don't do much of anything but open IE and check email, basic surfing, etc. When you really load up such a machine with apps and you consistently use them, then you'll see far more RAM in usage - note I said in usage which is a very good thing and means things are working perfectly. Whenever I see such "low memory" postings I just laugh... because it instantly confirms that people are ignorant and simply can't figure stuff out, nor do they bother to put forth any effort to learn. The maxim in Vista and Windows 7 is: unused RAM is wasted RAM and it's 100% accurate.
lalovista
yea it was running a little slow but now its up to speed again yet its still using so little memory..
Brandon Live Veteran Posted June 15, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 15, 2009 Win7 is quite a bit smarter about using RAM. Pre-populating RAM via SuperFetch and the disk cache is great (my Win7 TouchSmart has 2.5GB "cached" right now). But I see this is a laptop, and if it has a fast SSD then the disk caching will be less aggressive and SuperFetch may be deactivated. The SuperFetch / caching algorithms have been tweaked quite a bit too, and if you've been on battery power (looks like you're plugged in and charging in the screenshot) it may have been backing off to avoid doing I/O which costs battery life. crazzy88ss
nor do they bother to put forth any effort to learn. How much effort should you REALLY put towards learning the proper way OSs work? Who really NEEDS to know that more RAM used is better...?
zhangm Supervisor Posted June 15, 2009 Supervisor Share Posted June 15, 2009 How much effort should you REALLY put towards learning the proper way OSs work? Who really NEEDS to know that more RAM used is better...? Well, for a start, the people who are claiming that low RAM usage is good in all cases, because they're wrong and should be corrected. Dashel
I'm kinda disappointed they tuned it down from where Vista was it seems. Another tradeoff for crappy systems I guess (and those fraking netbooks).
Gibletz
I agree, Windows 7 is a great OS, however my system is my main gaming computer, and it's not a high spec machine either, I'm adding about 4GB to it and a better graphics card that takes advantage of DX 10 so I'll be going up to Win 7 as soon as that happens. :)
ajua
As in Vista, the more RAM cached the better. People still are thinking XP when things in the OS have changed. This screenshot shows the RAM usage in my test laptop with RC Build 7100. Only WLM, Firefox and Windows Explorer are running.
ToneKnee
To the person who said that turning Aero off would save more RAM, that's true for WDDM 1.0 based cards/drivers, but 1.1 fixes that problem.

evo21
Some people still think that the CORE of Windows 7 uses that amount of memory. They see a system with 4GB of RAM using about 2GB when idle and think that a PC with 1GB of RAM would not be able to run Windows 7 or Vista. Having a lot of free ram is like hiring alot of workers only for 10% of them actually work, while the rest are watching the others work. It is better to have everyone working so the production goes faster. So it is better to have all the ram utilized so the programs work faster. jjrambo
Yup! :)6 GB of RAM can be good. 12 GB is plain overkill right now. Not for me. I can use 8Gb-10Gb of RAM easily
