cabron
If I bought an external blu-ray player driver, I would be able to watch blu-ray movies? are there any blu-ray player for OS X? thanks
Phantom Helix
there are drives yes, however most your gonna get is blu-ray buring capabilities because there is no software to play blu-ray MOVIES on Mac unless they are home made HD movies burned to a blu-ray recordable disc. software to play commercial "hollywood" blu-ray movies on mac does not exist, and with the new Managed Copy blu-ray feature that is coming in the future i doubt Apple will provide blu-ray support if at all untill that spec is mainstreamed wich could be years
cabron
Damn it, so we (Mac users) are stuck with normal DVD's burners / players? that's unbelievable, we paid premium for a system that can't use the latest technology in multimedia? That's bull****.
Manish
What about through BootCamp or Parallel? Would that not work? How "mainstream" does Apple need Blu-Ray to get?
dolby71
yes. Bootcamp will work, Parallels - probably.

That's bull****. It is not as simple as that - there is a lot of licensing fees that are required. I believe Mr. Jobs referred to it as a "bag of hurt" The simplest solution is to get an external blu-ray drive and use BootCamp as there is no software for the mac that will work with the blu-ray hardware

I don't give a crap about Windows, I only use OS X and I paid a lot of money for this mac computer and I can't believe that a PC can beat my mac, because Apple don't want to use the latest and greatest multimedia hardware. This really **** me off.

Manish
Well if you don't give a crap about the only current solution (a.k.a. Windows), then you can enjoy just burning blu-rays on your expensive blu-ray drive on your expensive iMac. Why is it "a bag of hurt" for Mac, but not for Windows? (An actual question, not a taunt.) Surely, Apple could just pay the licensing fees?

DrCheese
It is not as simple as that - there is a lot of licensing fees that are required. I believe Mr. Jobs referred to it as a "bag of hurt" and yet other companies seem to manage fine. Apple is also a member of the BDA, so it can't be that hard. I believe the real reason is that they are trying to push the digital itunes versions for as long as they can

Surely, Apple could just pay the licensing fees? Good Question - I think a lot of it has to do with their push for digital media as well. The AppleTV and itunes is the route they would like customers to go instead of purchasing a Blu-Ray player And not to be rude but who honestly needs a blu-ray player on their computer? Seems a little like a waste to me. In iTunes 8.2 in the about section them mentioned Blu-Ray so I would assume we would see it in Macs if the demand grows and it becomes more popular
cabron
Don't give me wrong guys, its just that the way I see is like this, right now you can buy a windows laptop with blu-ray for half of the cost of what I paid for this iMac, same thing with the Macbook Pro, you paid an expensive premium for a laptop that does not have built in blu-ray. Almost all top Windows based laptop that I see in the market have blu-ray built in.

9UnknownMen
I can't believe that a PC can beat my mac, because Apple don't want to use the latest and greatest multimedia hardware. This really **** me off. You paid a premium for Steve Jobs' vision of what he thinks his customers needs and he deems Blu-Ray "a bag of hurt"(direct quote). Apple could easily have incorporated Blu-Ray but don't have the partner eco-system to absorb the licensing costs. Blu Ray might also cannibalize "HD" sales from iTunes even though the quality comparison is laughable. Remember, Apple finally just blessed y'all with SD Card slots and they aren't even multi-MMC. In iTunes 8.2 in the about section them mentioned Blu-Ray so I would assume we would see it in Macs if the demand grows and it becomes more popular well number 1 is people who want to copy their disc's, period lol and number 2 im going more with thats if you buy an external and have burned music to it and want to import it into itunes or backup your itunes library, that makes more sence my library is cloe to 600gb, can you immagine backing that up to DVD's???? wow that would cost more than if on BDR

kazuyette
There's no native software for playing Blu-Ray discs on Apple Computers ? I'm speechless ... Paying a premium for a machine that don't have a Blu-Ray player where you must use stupid solutions like Parallels or BootCamp just to play a damn movie ... There's something going wrong @ Apple's HQ. Bag of Hurt = Expression often said when trying to play a BluRay movie on an Apple rig :)

PowerDVD and others on windows have Commercial Blu-ray playback support and they licensed it, all apple would have to do is give us the software and we could use the drives we already have but they wont untill they can make it an internal device feature
