Outlook Not Syncing with Web/iPhone

Question

Im using Outlook 2007 to read my e mails from GMail. Works fine. However when I mark them as read in Outlook It doesnt mark them as read when I log into the web front end or using my iPhone. Is there anyway to get Outlook to mark these as read so the iPhone/Web Interface doesnt recognise them as new mails still.

I'm assuming you're talking about your previous .pst file that stored your emails? The way IMAP works is a bit different from POP3. Essentially your Outlook/iPhone mirror what's on the GMail servers. This is different from POP3. When you delete an email from the server in POP3 account, it still remains in Outlook. If you delete an email in Outlook on an IMAP account or on the server, it removes it from both places. What I would recommend in this case is using "local folders" within Outlook. I do this with my Apple Mail. You just go to File>New Folder and name it whatever you'd like and drop the messages in there. That way it doesn't take up storage on the server but you get to keep that file locally on your computer.

To get your old .pst, you can do a File>Import and choose a Outlook .PST and find the old .PST (typically in C:\Documents and Settings\%User Name%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook). Once you import those, I would create folders and drag them in, thus removing them from the email server, but keeping them on your computer. Let me know if you need more help. Thanks! :)
