Snakehn
quick question guys, i have time machine working with a 250Gb HDD but i would like to start over and just back up my pics, videos, music movies and docs, i don't care about the applications or configs.. Would it be ok if i go to the time machine options and exclude everything in the Machintosh HD and only backup the "Users" Folder?
blachole
If that's what you want to do then yes, it will do that.
Snakehn
Cool then, and i found some tips for customizing the schedule also, that would make it perfect for me. thanks.
Xero
Yep, you can if you really want to. But you won't be able to "Restore" to a Time Machine backup. Whereas right now if your computer puked out on you, or you got a new one. You could put in the Leopard disk, select Time Machine and restore the entire volume. OS, Apps, Settings, Photos, Music, whatever. If you exclude the system files you will only be able to restore some portions of it and most likely have to do it manually. Not a big deal but I prefer the ability to restore it without installing the OS myself and having to update my apps and personal preferences. However considering you only have 250GB and I have 1500GB for backups I can see why you wouldn't want to include everything. Also be careful about modifying the schedule. If you're delaying it, it should be ok, if you're speeding it up it will only do 24 for 1 day. So if you run it every 30 minutes instead of every hour, you'll only have the last 12 hours worth of backups.
Snakehn
ohh no problem, i used the "restore to a time machine backup" feature once when i upgraded to a 1TB Hard drive and it was nice, but yeah my external hard drive is only 250Gb and it's full, and i have a lot of pictures and family movies that haven't back up yet so i'm willing to let go the applications backup and system and just backup my personal files. no money for a new external hard drive right now :(
pasty2k2
I completely forgot that there is an Apple program called Time Machine haha. I thought you were referring to some actual Time Machine, assuming that this would be the definitive place to ask about it lol. Quite a funny concept, casually asking about temporal displacement! John S. Veteran Posted June 16, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 16, 2009 I first thought it was a giant waste of time...but after missing a file I've deleted a couple times and going back to retrieve it from time machine I'm sold.
