SkyDX
I just want to see the end of all those 16-bit icons from back in the late 90s! I know its not going to happen though unless they overhaul windows in a major way. Yeah that would be soooo great!
PyX
First of all, changing EVERY icon would be useless, as most of them are already nice, they fit well and somehow, we cannot reinvent the icons. They should start by getting rid of old Windows 95 and 98 and 2000 and XP icons.
Malisk
I think icon changes won't happen because the Aero UI won't change. There are no new UI guidelines, unlike in both XP and Vista, and the icons are part of such guidelines. I agree that those older icons should be upgraded though. IIRC, there were some XP ones lurking around, and perhaps even older.
Subject Delta
They got some new icons, and kept some old icons.I personally want them to update the icons for setup executables and MSIs, but that's not in the hands of Microsoft. MSI files they can update, as their icons are drawn from the Windows shell (they are all generic) but not setups. Exactly. Also, every release of wmp had a new icon. In wmp12 they only changed the hue of the icon from greenish to blueish (that's just lazy). It's as if all microsoft's graphic designers took a leave of absence for the duration of windows 7 development. No they haven't, Windows Vista's icons where not updated right until the last moment. The priority is to work on actually making 7 a good OS, graphics come in as an afterthought when everything else is nearing completion.
MrMB
Why would they change the icons? They've already changed a few since vista, presumably that wasn't just for fun; I cant see them changing them again.
Penryn
They probably save those new icons & additional features for the Service Pack 1 lol

Go back and check your facts, vista had updated icons well before pre-RTM and RTM escrow builds. Quillz
Windows 95 and 98 had the exact same icon set. So why shouldn't Windows Vista and 7?
vask
Windows 95 and 98 had the exact same icon set. So why shouldn't Windows Vista and 7? No, they didn't. 98 had more detail and colours in every icon. They kept the style of the icons but icons were completely redrawn. zhangm Supervisor Posted June 16, 2009 Supervisor Share Posted June 16, 2009 More like windows 8 with this turtle pace of progress (graphic ui wise at least). Maybe you somehow have missed it, but UI changes have happened, and they confuse people. The Superbar. The new Control Panel layout. The Start Menu. The Aero Peek button. The new task notifications area. The Ribbon interface in Paint/Wordpad. People have complained about all these changes, because they've made things different. George P Global Moderator Posted June 16, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted June 16, 2009 As many have said, new icons need no testing and can just be dropped in at the last build for RTM. We won't know till they do it or it hits Gold master status and is done. Only time will tell.
lee31
Why does every windows 7 forum thread lately have to end up being about icons? They're not important and most users don't pay that much attention to them. You lot who keep going on and on and on about this are just being way too fussy and you also seem to being forgetting the fact that windows 7 is just a minor release as far as MS are concerned so icons are the least of their problems. If you don't like them you can always change them yourself.

Considering we have entered the stage of development where each build is a potential RTM candidate and is voted on by microsoft engineers for it to be signed off, those people need to evaluate the whole package to determine whether a particular build is rtm worthy. Given this, the chances of new icons close to zero.
iamwhoiam
graphics come in as an afterthought That's the whole complaint though. There's so much mismatched stuff in Windows it isn't funny. I'm not one for all the "eye candy" features, but there should be more consistency than there is.
gameboy1977
Windows 95: Windows 98: wow I don't know that one.. I don't noticed that Windows 95 or 98 because of icons. I used first Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, then XP and now Vista. I knew that Windows ME and 2000 icons are almost same maybe... Lannister
Just with they'd banish the old windows 3.1 looking icons to the dustbin of history, like the one presented to you on the "Insert Object" dialog n Wordpad. It really is the time to go through the icons with a fine tooth comb and clean out the crap.
Welshknight
it amuses me no end that the greatest version of windows since xp is about to be unleashed on the world and all some of you do is moan about the lack of new icons... vask
I don't understand, its not like you can't change these icons after you get the OS...so I'm not sure what the big deal is? Well, first of all there is no built-in way to change all the icons in the OS easily. I don't like third party apps that add that functionality, a lot of them have problems that can create quite a mess with some icons not changing or default icons being screwed up. Secondly that's not even th point. This is not a do it youself kind of product. When I buy something I want it to be complete. What they have currently (provided nothing changes) is simply an unfinished and inconsistent mess (as far as the icons go). Even the 3 default icons that are pinned to the taskbar look messy because 2 of them are straight on (2d style) and the media player icon is with perspective (3d style). This particular inconsistency carries on throughout the whole os. it amuses me no end that the greatest version of windows since xp is about to be unleashed on the world and all some of you do is moan about the lack of new icons...Like Who cares...just bring on the 7 love.. Why do so many people love to jump into a thread and post that they don't care about what is being discussed? If you don't care then don't comment. boogerjones
I agree that the icons could use a refresh and resoundingly disagree with the person that said icons are unimportant. At least they got rid of that awful Windows 3.1-style font dialog. Overall pretty happy with Windows 7, especially given the mess that Vista and its development cycle were. Also happy that Microsoft isn't marketing Windows 7 to be something it's not; like the "revolutionary" change that Vista was supposed to be. They made some useful changes to parts of the operating system I use most. Hopefully the trend will continue.
Jimmy422
People must've missed by thread. I emailed the Engineering 7 team and got a reply from Steven Sinofsky telling me that they weren't finished with 7's visuals yet. Visuals include wallpapers, icons, etc. People are also forgetting that the majority of vista icons were added in the last builds before gold status. They're coming, they're just on the last of the priority list. The RTM isn't going to be this weekend; they're nowhere near done with everything yet. It looks absolutely supid having 4 new icons that match no others.
