Screenshots from 7260 out

I emailed the Engineering 7 team and got a reply from Steven Sinofsky telling me that they weren't finished with 7's visuals yet. Visuals include wallpapers, icons, etc.

Visuals may include wallpapers, icons, etc, but that is not the reply that you got. He said only that not every visual detail was in place yet. That could mean there is one additional icon. That could mean a minor change in font rendering. It could mean changing the color of a line of text. You're just extrapolating a much larger change from a vague comment, and that will lead to unreasonable expectations from a promise that was never there to begin with.

Yeah i know i'm going a little overboard :( I'm just hoping for the best. I wish i got a longer reply or a more yes/no on the icons. Then again, i asked specifically about icons, and he said that they weren't finished with every visual aspect, so i'd assume he meant icons.

The Vista icons are already very very good. More visual novelty is always welcome, but I wouldn't be disappointed if they kept the Vista icons.

I can't wait for a new startup sound though. I hope they make it sound more something like pre-Vista era. Vista sounds canned and timid.

I'm betting there will be new icons by RTM, it would be silly to have just a few new icons with different style along with the old Vista style ones, I wouldn't be surprised if we get a new visual theme too, come on guys it's just common sense.

Yes, they obviously have a clear artwork plan with Windows 7 with the new logon screen, the few new icons, and the new wallpaper. They are ahead of schedule in many other ways and I can't believe that the visual designers are working on absolutely nothing at this stage.

The only programs that have gotten new icons are ones that have been re-styled in another fashion. Wordpad and Paint got the Fluent interface. Calculator has been redone. The Control Panel has been reorganized. The notification area icons have also been remade. The Libraries and Homegroup are new features.

There needs to be balance between novelty and recognizability. I don't think we'll get anything other than new wallpapers, though a high-resolution, less compressed version of the login screen would be nice to have. And new visualizations for WMP.

Nice to see good progress there... to bad it's only .vhd and x86 :(

At this rate though, they'll reach 7300 pretty soon.

I just want to see the end of all those 16-bit icons from back in the late 90s! I know its not going to happen though unless they overhaul windows in a major way.

Yes, now that's really long, long overdue :pinch:

People must've missed by thread. I emailed the Engineering 7 team and got a reply from Steven Sinofsky telling me that they weren't finished with 7's visuals yet. Visuals include wallpapers, icons, etc. People are also forgetting that the majority of vista icons were added in the last builds before gold status.

They're coming, they're just on the last of the priority list. The RTM isn't going to be this weekend; they're nowhere near done with everything yet. It looks absolutely supid having 4 new icons that match no others.

Good to know. If you have such a good connection to him, could you tell him that he should get rid of all the old junk that's still lingering around?

I'd consider that as even more important than updating the Vista icons with new ones - at least the Vista ones still look halway decent, while the old junk is only :x

After reading 4 pages of the basically the same stuff being said... all I gotta say is... DAMN.

New icons will be in RTM, blah... that's nice and all, doesn't really matter too much. Just makes the OS GUI more consistent, which yes, is great.

If for some reason, it doesn't happen, whatever... Windows 7 is STILL the best OS since XP. Let it go, and let's change the subject back to when this build will be leaked or when the next build will be leaked next! Lol.

How about let's not change the subject. If you want to talk about something else make another thread. While we are off the original subject, why does everyone hail win7 as the next coming of jesus and dismiss vista at the same time. For the record, the best os since xp is vista. Windows 7 is not much more than a glorified service pack or at best a Vista SE.

Now, back to the original topic which was about the absence of any hint of updated icons from the screenshots of the first RTM candidate.

I don't have good connections, i just used the "Send question" button on the Engineering 7 blog :p

Wow... way to blow that out of proportion. The reason 7 is the best thing since XP is because technically it is. In terms of speed and how user friendly it is. Vista was a giant mess. Not entirely M$' fault, but it was a mess. Hell, I praised Vista over and over to friends and family, and I still think it's a good OS, better than OSX, but... it's not 7. I'm sorry you feel differently, and that's your opinion... you are entitled to it. Next time though, be a bit nicer though, no one likes a sour puss. 7 though, isn't a SP, or Vista SE, it's still a big enough release to be it's own name... Kernel wise, GUI-wise, speed-wise, etc. I used Vista back when it was Longhorn, and I've used 7 since Public Beta... there is a big difference between the two. Just because the coding itself is built off of Vista, doesn't make it Vista.

And does it really matter about the icons, really? Like I stated it before, it's not that big of a deal, besides adding more consistency with the rest of the UI that is.

Wow, that's really clever. I've never seen anyone use a dollar sign in an abbreviation of Microsoft before. I bet it is a subtle but crafty knock at how Microsoft is a company that wants to make money, yes?

I have and I find it hilarious every time I see it. Well done Relativity.

That change was made with the expectation that most modern computers have nice speaker systems with subwoofers, and very percussive, bassy startup sounds end up way too loud on that type of speaker system.

I agree with this......if they will not implement new icons it will be like it's not finished. So....for sure new icons will appear. ;)

I'm not sure this time about new UI elements. People are so positive about Windows 7, I don't think MS sees a reason to upgrade the UI. We are the victim of our own enthousiasm. Also, Vista only got a few 'flower' icons in the end, and not every icon changed. Can't forget how UGLY i thought these new flower-icons were. I hated them very much :) Now I'm used to them though. But first I thought it was a joke.

Wait, what? Vista changed every icon from XP. Windows 7 only changed a handful, but at least it goes well with most of the Vista-style icons. What I would really like is for them to come up with something better looking than the "Basic" blue gradient theme, as a lot of programs with inner windows take on that theme instead of being transparent. It really does look pretty ugly.

Microsoft has never been the top with the "GUI aspect" in my opinion,Apple always makes everything consistent and fluid. Even though i really like Aero Glass,i think Windows 7 should have come with an updated version of it,at least. Hoping to see a latest surprise in the very final RTM,even though it's just a dream i guess lol

There is an updated version WDDM 1.1 which should improve performance of glass.

Also, FYI Apple's UIs are far from consistant, the thread was so old finding the screenie will be different, but all of their built in applications have different designs for back and forward designs, and they are all in different places.

Personally I think the UI in 7 is one of Microsoft's best and is pretty easy to navigate and use

I would like too see a redesign of the actually theme, I think the layout is fine and all, but I think it need to not look like Vista 2.

Do Microsoft actually have a proper design department? I am not actually talking about UI layout but more the actually look of stuff. They always seem to be a bit weak on that front. Luna, for XP, looked pretty bad and unfinished. Vista was a big improvement, but still wasn't quite there. I just think I big company like Microsoft would get some real talent in to design a visually stunning UI.

Look at all the artists creating themes on DeviantArt, they've pretty trumped Microsoft... pretty much for free.
