Howto turn off those annoying HUGE member signatures

Recommended Posts

I like seeing other peoples sigs, as others have already said it gives a little insight of what they're into/about. I personally make mine smaller than they could be, only because it just looks too large at the max size, plus it makes it easier to stay under the file size limit. :D SAVE THE SIGS!!! :p

I also believe that the "regulars" here may be use to it, and therefore do not see the issue

But when I started reading the replies, I couldn't believe that the Sig was bigger (and bolder) than the reply itself.

Are you new to forums or something?

I <3 sigs!

I read them all. Some change daily, some stay the same. Some suck, 99% don't. But all give out more about the people around here than one can glean from their posts.

Sigs add to the fabric of Neowin. They do not detract.

Sigs FTW!! :woot:

Agreed. I read all of them too - it gives a little insight to the person. ;)

Your sig leaves a huge amount of whitespace, because the rest of your profile info pushes the table down.

Don't get me wrong, I think that profile crap is idiotic as well. It should at the very least be single spaced, like it was in Shift and every other IPB forum I go to.

And do we really need 2 post count indicators? (stars and number)

Do we really need both "member number" and "joined date"?

Incredibly large sigs FTW

Not sure which is worse, the signature images, the size of them, the fact only you can see it, or that you changed the subscriber image to pink.

People fought for both stars and badges. You try and take the postcount away and they'll all go into to cardiac arrest.

I disabled signatures as soon as I registered. I also use cached images in my browser in order to turn off all images in posts. This helps me eliminate having to view those enormous fail pics that begin to get on the nerves after a while. Now, if I want to view any new images in a page, I just have to click a button on my toolbar.

Ironic that your signature actually advertises a post, so therefore what you don't like, you are doing. haha

I like seeing signatures, it's (just like avatars) a quick way to identify the poster, and since there are quite a lot of xbox live users with gamertags in their sigs on Neowin I can also check out people's XBL profiles quickly.

Yeah, I turned them off a long time ago, members have very annoying signatures, i don't need to read that ****.

+1

Been disabled since 2001 for me. Quicker page loading, less distractions etc.

Well since most of the time the left side with the user information takes more space than my short sarcastic comments that everyone hate (alongside me), it has some nice extra space for a small signature - since I have a huge proxy cache once I load someone's signature, it's not going to take any time off of loading the page.

The maximum overall size for signatures is 170 pixels high by 550 pixels wide - this also includes text as well.

File sizes should be no larger than 75KB. Smaller is preferred as we need to be mindful of our members on dial up access

See the limit is perfectly fine to be honest. 170px isn't much. Hell I would think 200px was big but you think they're huge when the majority of members have smaller than the limit sigs?

I keep them enabled, because I like to see them. Yes 550px wide is definately a bit large but still. My sig's canvas size is larger than the sig itself so the shadow can be applied.

I don't see the problem with signatures, I only block stupid ones like those stupid 'Boycott Opera' images, and some that are overtly religious, but overall I don't have a problem with signatures and avatars, they add a bit more of a personal touch to a user and differentiate them from other users

How to turn off those annoying HUGE member signatures

Click on: nav_m_dark.gifBoard Settings

Directly under Board Display Settings, you should see the question:

Do you wish to view members signatures when reading topics?

Please answer No to this question, using the drop down box

Then scroll down to: Change my Account Options button, and click it

Congratulations, you can now read topics without seeing huge ads and who knows what! On members posts :)

You can read here on Avatar & Signature Guidelines as well: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=25368

Moderators: I have made this in its own topic, so I can provide this info in my signature

Even though I can't see anyone's signatures. This will hopefully help others, similar to me

Who do not want to see CLICK ME ads all over the place!, and just want to read the posts

What's your resolution, 320x280?

I actually like seeing the signatures even though I'm not creative enough to make one.

Good grief -- open up MS Paint and play ! ;) Let the child in you run free ...

I know this is an old topic, but I wish IPB would have an option to disable Signature Images only. I'm one of those that don't like images in signatures, but I think its fine with a few textlines of information, especially when members add useful links to FAQs and things like that.

And I don't like animated avatars either.

Ok, now I'm finished with my whining for some time. :p

You could use stylish in firefox to block images in signatures.

@namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml);

@-moz-document domain("neowin.net") {
   .signature img
   {
      display: none;
   }
}
