Do I need to install directx to play games?

Hi guys, I have installed yesterday windows 7 RC on a new machine. Just wondering if I want to play games do I need to install the directx as in vista and xp? or it is available to windows 7 by defualt?

directX is already a part of Windows, you should not need to install it, some game installers do install it but if the version on your system is newer it does not change anything so just say yes if it asks you to install

or it will only update the necessary parts of it.

Yes, you do need it. The various versions of the DirectX support libraries are not part of Windows.

Well, technically you don't need to install them unless you have a game that depends on them and won't run, but it doesn't hurt to download the latest redistributable so you'll already have them.

Better run the web installer. It will download only the updated files that are needed: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

I gave the URL for the full redist because I think I remember reading that someone had problems with the web installer on a Windows 7 build, but it's a good one to bookmark too.

Yep, its all included. Next thing you know EU will be jumping at Microsoft for DX.

very sad if that happens. i hate openkode more than i hate myself.
