Look at your harddrive and see if you have a version of the Optional Media Update on it already, if so delete it. Maybe try reseting the patches cache as well. Like marketplace settings or something and a few others. If It makes a difference the Optional Media Pack has a check next to it and it asked if I want to download again. bakersman91sicc
I can download everything else like demos and such, but the Optional Media Update gives an error. Any ideas? I've been having the same exact problem! I recently reformatted my HDD and tried to re-download the "Optional Media Update" from the marketplace with the same results... "can't download". This was all after their 24hr "maintenance" yesterday. I've been calling XBox Live support, and their computer prompts they robotically read are not much of help. One response I received through email from support is to try to make a temporary silver account which is free, and re-download the Optional Media Update. I tried it, but it did not work for me. Hopefully they get this fixed soon. I'm trying to stream some xvid files of my external hard drive.

Mike415
I guess it was a server problem. Worked tonight!

Snakehn
i had the same issue a couple of days ago, it seems that the service was under maintenance, my question now is... So if the xbox is not signed in, we can't watch divx movies and stuff like that?

I'm pretty sure that the issue with the optional media updates is that they are separately licensed, so you have to be logged in to download it, and Microsoft has to pay a per-user fee. I'm not sure if that license is tied to your tag or to your console. I assume that it is tied to the console (it is on Sony hardware). You shouldn't need to be authenticated to the live servers to use it.
