Xbox Live Gold for $1 in US

Thursday 18-Jun-2009 9:52 AM A month for a buck... then back to normal

North American Xbox Live Silver members now have no excuse not to upgrade to the proper Gold service... unless they're level 50 street tramps.

Microsoft's offering a month of Gold membership for $1 (?0.61) to its US users, according to an ad spotted on (where else?) Xbox Live. Although of course it's only a "limited-time offer".

Once the 60p month's finished North American punters - unless they bail out - will be automatically charged for the remaining 11 months of membership - and that won't cost $1.

We're on the case with Microsoft UK to see if this deal is going to jump the pond.

Can you cancel live subscriptions during a subscription period?

I'd read the T&C to see if you're bound to a 12 month sub or not.

If you can cancel after 1 month, good deal.

Call them up and have the automatic renewal removed, easy.

Or use a virtual credit card with a $1 limit

Problem is they'll most likely suspend your account if you do that, few of my friends have had Microsoft try and charge off a 'closed' card or a card with insufficient funds and they had their account suspended until they worked it out with Microsoft ... So unless that has changed, I would suggest not to.

nice way to trick people into buying a 12 month subscription

That's my question is it a 1 month sub with auto-renew so you can cancel, or are you buying a 12 month sub?

Still even if it's a 12 month sub it's not a bad deal. But I dunno what official MS prices for a 12 month sub are vs a 12 month sub off ebay.

Trick? All the info is in the T&C's, it's the buyers fault if they don't read them.

And epic deal :)

I'm pretty sure it's Microsoft's hope people won't realize the auto-renew policy, but hey, if they don't pay attention that's their fault.

It's available in Australia too. I just paid one on mine. A great deal. I know about the auto-renew thingy and I will contact them today next month to cancel the renew :).

Isn't 12 months of Live straight from MS already $49.99? You can find 13 month cards (12+1 extra month) for just under $40. One month for $1 then canceling the auto renew, that's a good deal, but the rest, not at all.

Nup it's $80 AU 12 months if buy from Microsoft, $40 AU for 3 months, and $11 for a month.

Is there anywhere else, legitmatately where I can purchase cheaper 12months Live? I want somewhere that is trustful.

And being on a disability pension this is nice deal :)

Lately a Lot of people are coming in complaining about microsoft auto renewing. EM DUH. It says that RIGHT ON THE SCREEN.

"..by putting your credit card informaton on this screen you allow us to charge you unless you cancel or deny us the right to charge, etc blah blah blah...".

Not exact words but you get it.

I tell EVERYONE, just walk into a store. You get 13 months so this way you didnt "waste gas". I hate when people are being lazy. Only use your card online when your buying stuff from amazon and etc. Not something like this that gives you daily/monthly service(i.e. live, netflix, etc) that you know you will only want for a short period of time.

Anyway, I also, in january or february I think found a 13 month card for $30 during that sale buy/amazon/best buy/ etc were having. That saved me money for my gf's live.

Mine, when the time comes, if they dont hit 30 by next april, anytime between now and april, ill just use my discount at work and i pay $40 for 13 months.

Im not complaining.
