Report: Microsoft CEO Says New Xbox 360 Arriving In 2010

Recommended Posts

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke at the Executive's Club of Chicago today, informing attendees that a new Xbox 360 will arrive in 2010, one equipped with a "natural interface" and built-in camera. Sound familiar? Either Ballmer has been reading 1UP, who recently ran a rumor that Microsoft would be re-launching the Xbox 360 next year with its Project Natal tech built into the device, or he's the CEO of Microsoft for chrissakes.

According to TG Daily's recount of Ballmer's talk, in which he discussed "the role of innovation in changing economic times," the executive made mention of the new Xbox 360 configuration, one that Microsoft hasn't exactly denied.

It makes a great deal of sense to bundle the tech with the stock Xbox 360, as peripheral support for the Natal-powered version of the box would ensure greater support. And Microsoft's Shane Kim recently told Kotaku that the size of the launch of Natal would be on par with a new generation console launch.

Clearly, Microsoft also has designs on launching a version of its motion and depth-sensing camera as a peripheral, so current Xbox 360 owners don't have to upgrade to an all new box. 1UP's story on the "Xbox Natal" indicated that the device would also see a hardware spec boost, but it appears Ballmer didn't drop details on that.

We've contacted Microsoft to get one more comment on the matter and will update when we hear back.

Looks like more of you should have believed 1UP ;)

I can't see this being the "Xbox 3" really.

Maybe the "Xbox 360 v2"... What happened to the "It'll last 10 years!" claim? :|

I thought that was Sony's claim. I don't recall Microsoft saying the 360 will last 10 years. Hold onto your PS3s people.

1Up's article made it seem like it would be an upgraded 360... This makes it seem like a bundle, which does make sense to me.

We'll just have to wait for more details.

I forgot that, true.

I bet it's a redesign though, possibly a slim.

I dunno if the gaming division will be happy with Balmer confirming this so early mind you :/ Only last week or so MS were denying those 1UP rumours.

Yeah I can understand a redesign and perhaps integration of the device (though I think integration is a bad choice for something like this -- it should be placed wherever the user wants it).

I think that too...cause that would mean the console would have to be directly under or above the TV..maybe a Wii style sensor bar is the way to go..

this isn't a new console, but a revised 360, correct? Depending on the added features, it could be good. i don't care about Natal at all.

Has everyone forgotten about the next 360 hardware update? Going 45nm iirc and putting the CPU and GPU on the same package. I forget the codename for it though. Anyways, that could see a slimmer 360 if it's done right, and then adding Natal into the new SKU is sorta like a whole new console launch really.

Toss in a bigger HDD and that covers everything. Now we just need the right price.

Better just be a natal bundle or something if they really release an xbox with majorly updated hardware I'll be ****ed cause I just barely bought one.

Yeah, I think the bundle thing is most likely but I wouldn't be surprised if Natal is integrated somehow in newer consoles.

Either way, it will be 360 v2 as someone else said. So no worries. MS looks poised to have the 360 platform around for awhile.

my news story has a source...

but this is getting ****ing stupid...

Don't you find it funny that no one has really ever sourced this guy for information? Half of their "exclusives" have never even been mentioned on any major gaming site.

A source of a source, who no one has heard of. Sounds like "my friend's dad works at microsoft who told me that x is coming out and y will be in it." :p

I point to the fact Ballmer said "a new Xbox 360" And not a totally new Xbox. He probably just means a new revision like what we've been getting and or a new sku with Natal inside.

oh my bad, i guess i should have explained in my article who and what G4TV was...

the original source of the information comes from a live blog covering Balmer's keynote speech talking about Innovation during a Recession.
