Alternate Download Locations

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm trying to download the English release of Windows 7 RC1, preferably in 64-bit format. However, the windows download manager constantly downloads corrupted files which fail the integrity check. I've tried using Internet Explorer and Firefox, and even download the 32-bit version, with the same error being thrown up in each instance.

I'd heard it was available on torrent sites, but wondered if there is a better secure way of checking I have the correct file to avoid malware.

Cheers,

Wowl

Hi Wowl,

It's unfortunate that you can't download Windows 7 RC1 x86 or x64 from Microsoft using their download manager. As always, the RC is available from other sources which I won't mention here. I'll leave that part to you. ;)

Luckily for you, there is a method to check the integrity of a Windows 7 RC1 x86 or x64 ISO. All you need to do is download and install FastSum from here. Preferably, you'll want the Standard Edition and not the Command Line Edition. It just makes things easier to use when you have menus and buttons to click on, that's all.

The program itself is easy to use. Simply add the file in question and hit F9 to run a calculation. Once you do that, the Checksum/State will appear on the same line as the file's name and size. That [hexadecimal] number is commonly referred to as an MD5 hash number. If the hash number you calculated matches the reported hash number for the file in question, then that file has not been changed or tampered with.

I just calculated the hash number for the x64 version of Windows 7 RC1.
