Question about Fable II's M rating

Recommended Posts

For those that have either finished the game or played it deep into the story: does the game deserve an M rating? I've been playing it for one day and the violence aspect of it seems pretty tame. The only blood I saw was every once in a while when the character does a finishing move there is a gush of blood. Does the game get more sexual as it progresses? I'm just curious because it seems like a game my son would enjoy but I don't want to be sideswiped by some "hot coffee" style action later on.

There is 'sex' in the game, but it's nothing more than a black screen and some suggestive sounds, maybe the controller shaking, don't really remember :p And, there's no swearing as far as I know and there's a blood-filter. I never even realized it was rated M, I think it's suited for kids if you put the filter on.

Depending on how old your son is, I can imagine it being quite scary at points, especially for the younger generation.

There's no explicit sexual scenes, or anything like that. I hoenstly didn't realise it was M =/

The next one will have explicit sexual scenes I bet. heh. Seriously though, in this one you can have a family etc right? So then in the next one they'll give you the option of leaving your wife and or having an affair with your sister in law and stuff. We gotta make it more realistic you know?

You *can* leave your wife on this one. But most people will choose the good option, so this won't be apparant.

ironman, no idea why this was an M - no cuss words, a bit of fake blood, no nudity, and only allusions to sex. I'd say kids 12 and older...it's fine.

The sex itself is blacked out (with suitably suggestive comments before, during, and after as in the first), but the series is known for treating these social aspects with a certain kind of cracked perspective (the bordello questline in the first Fable where you had the option of getting the deed to the bordello by crossdressing and sleeping with the proprietor).

Fable 2 continues in that tradition, there are plenty of "ladies of the night" (not to mention crossdressing men of the night), relationships aren't strictly heterosexual, "group activity" sex is possible and characters have ratings on how loose they are in their personality type ("randy" etc).

There's a questline that could result in logical necrophilia (Lady Grey can be resurrected). In general depending on how you act during the earlier parts of the game large areas of the gameworld can become distinctly unpleasant places...

Depending on how squeamish you are, there's some other stuff in there that might give you pause as well...there's some small quests related to Hobbes that are unpleasant (runaway children become Hobbes in Fable's universe, one kills his own father while you're attempting to help the father locate his runaway child, later you find a person who has runaway who is in the process of becoming a hobbe who has some unpleasant notes related to his growing cannibalism strewn about the cave, and then in the endgame you may have a quest where your own child is captured by hobbes, and the child could potentially die).

Whether you'll ever see a lot of this stuff is in large part dependent on how you play the game too. The more "evil" that you are, the rougher the world gets. There's a questline where you could lure people to a dark temple and sacrifice them (I didn't ever play this one, didn't even see the temple until after I had missed the quest).

Fable is an excellent series, but there's definitely quite a lot of material in there that some people would not want their younger kids having access to without supervision. I'd recommend that you at least play as far as Bloodstone and Westcliff before you make a decision so that you get a better overview of the game's content. The first hour is pretty much tutorial on the ethics system, IIRC.

My personal opinion is that while some of this is "objectionable" that I'd much rather have my kids (had I any) accessing it and exploring it in a sandbox style environment with the knowledge that I was available for questions than in a more uncontrolled real life scenario, but your mileage may vary.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll go with dead monkey's suggestion and play a little further. I just married someone last night but I still need to go back home to finalize it, so we'll see how that goes. :D
