Fid
Hi all, I just wondered what everyone else did on these things... 1. Desktop Icons - do you have them or not? For some reason, I always think there should be no shortcuts or icons on the mac desktop, aside from the HDD :D What do you do? (on Windows, my desktop is full) 2. The dock - do you hide, or have it showing the whole time? I used to have it hidden (so you have the whole screen to work with)? 3. Safari 4 or Firefox :D - I'm used to firefox... but was thinking Safari because it's Apple software, so makes sense to use it on the mac :D Plus, they've finally fixed a bug that was annoying me and made me use Firefox/Camino before. Geoffrey B. Veteran Posted June 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 22, 2009 1) Have HDD icons Nothing else. 2) its always there however it is rather small. 3) Firefox 3.5 RC 2 currently.
REM2000
1. HDD icons and sometimes some folders with active work / data, also sometimes have links to web pages 2. always visible, just can't seem to work with a hidden dock, i think it's because some apps provide feedback through the dock, i.e. mail number of new messages etc.. 3 Safari
+Frank B. Subscriber² Posted June 22, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted June 22, 2009 1. HDD icons only. 2. Dock always visible (bottom, 3D), icon size 32x32 3. Alternating between Safari 4.0 and Firefox 3.5 RC2 made to look more Mac-like using the GrApple Tangy theme.
medium_pimpin
1 - HDD and Trash only 2 - Doc always visible 3 - Safari and Opera
suspiria
1 - No internal HDD icon. Only show when external drives are connected. 2 - Dock always visible: 32px on the right side. 3 - Safari
thefarewellnote
1. Drives icons - 32 px good need 2. Always visable 3. Safari 4 - Never got into Firefox I also have noticed that many users create icons on their left hand side of the screen for common applications or folders (like apps, documents, downloads, etc...) sorta like this. There are some great 32 px icons out there for this. And if you remove the alias icon they look even better!
PyX
1. I put any kind of stuff on my desktop to have quick access. I disabled the automatic icons, like the HDD. And I display it as a list of items with their 16x16 px icon on the left. 2. Dock is always visible. Not fully-sized by default, and when I over my mouse on it, it becomes at full size so that I can see clearly on my 24" ! 3. Safari 4. It crashes a lot here and have noticed a few new bugs in Safari 4 (the scrollbar sometimes disappears or zooming on pages can make javascripts crash) that I reported and that have not been fixed... but it's still the best browser out there IMO. Firefox just doesn't have it n the Mac. And Chrome, well, it's far from the final version.
Brian M. Veteran Posted June 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 22, 2009 1. Hard Drive icons, and anything im temporarily working with before it gets filed away (nothing's there more than an hour or so). 2. Hidden, 2D. 3. Safari 4.
Fid
It's interesting to see the majority only have HDD icons on their desktop, keep the dock in view the whole time and mostly use Safari 4 :D. I'm going to give it a go having the dock in view (as that's how I always see it on most macs) and going to give Safari 4 a try, so far it's working quite well. KoL Veteran Posted June 22, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 22, 2009 1. HDD icons and shortcut icons (Pictures, Music etc) 32px 2. Visible and they are around 32px too 3. Firefox
PNWDweller
I insist on having a clean desktop on the Mac, but don't seem to have that luxury at the moment. I use volumizer to hide my Drive Icons and instead have made shortcuts to the dock which is always visible. Sooo... 1. Hard Drives not visible 2. Dock Visible 3. FF 3.5 RC
bob_c_b
1. HDD icons, default size of 48px 2. Dock visible 3. Safari 4 everywhere except eBay as they don't seem to get along with the new seller form, then FireFox (but that isn't very often).
pdmcmahon
1. HDD Icons visible, especially since I have 4 local disks and 4 network disks that I mount. 2. Dock visible, I used to launch apps from Spotlight, but I have gone back to using the dock for most everything. 3. While Firefox is slow, I just can't get with not being able to hold down +Return to add http:// and .com when manually typing in websites. If I do that (by habit) in Safari, it opens a new tab, lame. Also, the add-on of Forecast Fox is just too good to not have. Safari is nice, and it's fast, but Firefox still just does it for me.
Laurë Veteran Posted July 5, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 5, 2009 1. I only have files that I've recently downloaded. I usually let the clutter build up for a while until I get annoyed and clear it up. I don't see the desktop too often so I don't really care what it looks like, nor do I find short cut icons that useful. 2. Visible, I use the icons a lot to start things and as a short cut to get to a running program when things are on other Spaces. 3. Firefox. Tried Safari on Windows before I had the Mac and found it so horrific that I never gave it the time of day in OS X :p
TylerW7
1. Just my HDD, sometimes important files. 2. Visible, I like to know when I get Tweets and email. 3. Safari. I would use Chrome, but its not final.

Guest
1) Hard disk drives and sometimes the odd temporary file I'm working on. 2) Dock is always shown and I think its the default size, maybe a bit smaller. 3) I've been sort of going back and forth between Firefox & Safari. -Clark-
1. Rarely look at it, but it has HD and WoW shortcut. Don't need anything there. 2. Hidden and rather small. Maybe if I went with the 17" instead of 15" I would leave it out. Don't really use that much from it once OS X boots up and I open everything I will need to use. 3. Safari 4, switched a few days before FF3.5 came out, and am very pleased with it, no adblock that would be nice for some sites, but I will cope. StevoJD
1. I have only hard drive icons. There's no need for desktop icons when you have the dock and stacks. 2. I have a fairly big monitor so screen real estate isn't a problem. I leave the dock visible 100% of the time, but it's really small because I think it looks better that way. 3. Firefox. Sure, Safari is faster and nicer on OS X, but Firefox has add-ons and I prefer how it behaves more. Like Safari doesn't ask me for a download confirmation, that for me is a deal breaker. Minimalistic, HDD, a resize prog I made in automator and 2 folders 2. Showingggggggggg, I liked having it hidden but it used to show when I didn't want it to!! My fault I know but still :) 3. Firefox as I can't get away from my add-ons! I do like safari 4 however FF 3.5 will do for me :)
osirisX
1. No icons at all. HDD icons are pointless when I can just go into Finder or use Spotlight. 2. Dock showing, on the bottom, 3D, no magnification, the size is locked so other users can't fiddle with it, and minimise using the Genie effect. 3. Safari 4. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted July 7, 2009 Veteran Share Posted July 7, 2009 1. No icons. I like to be minimal as possilbe and tend to use keyboard shortcuts a lot. Same on my Windows PC. 2. Dock hidden at the bottom in 3D, no magnification and using scale effect. 3. Firefox 3.5. I like the speed of Safari, but love FF add-ons.
