Microsoft Releasing Faster Xbox 360 Dashboard This Year

Did anyone else notice? When NXE launched, it was pretty quick. But it's just gotten slower...and slower. (Thanks ads!) Luckily, Microsoft is admitting there's an issue and has a plan to fix it.

During his last podcast, Xbox spokesperson/kind guidance counselor Major Nelson revealed that a "faster" dashboard update would be coming later this year with "a lot of very cool new features." (We're guessing those features include apps like Twitter and the capability to stream 1080p content?both shown off at E3?though some other unexpected goodies would be welcome.)

Of course, many have already forgotten that NXE promised to end these seasonal dashboard updates, allowing new features to unroll all year. Apparently that's just not happening. But hey, a faster dash in 2009![/quoSource: Gizmodo

Edit: Fixed spelling. (I had no idea what you guys were talking about.:wacko:cko: )

YAY!! Faster is always welcome, although the current speed of the dashboard doesn't bother me now. More features is what I like to hear about.

Great news (Y) I hope they make the main dash the player one, not the ad one, too. Just a minor nitpick I have.

IMO you shouldn't see ads at all if you're a paying gold member.

But I guess the best compromise would be Silver members start on the ad one, Gold members the main one (but they still have the ad section when browsing).

That sound fair?

Last night was the first time I noticed any bit of slowness while navigating the dashboard. I kept seeing empty "boxes" only to be filled in after a few seconds. I thought it was my internet speed at first but after a quick speed test I was still getting 7 down/1 up. So any speed up will be appreciated.

This weekend I upgraded my ISP and now get MUCH faster speeds. I hadn't thought about it but where I used to get the Xbox equivalent of an hourglass areas that would be network reliant (Netflix, friends list, etc.) it is now very snappy. I know this is not what they're talking about, but it was a pleasant surprise for me. I can also now watch HD through Netflix. Woohoo! :D

I have checked it, and I really think the marketplace slowness, where it takes ages to show you the price and enable the buy button, is due the download history size.

My gold account takes ages (long list)

my wifes silver account (no download history) instant...

Not sure what delays friends list popup etc.

My dashboard is always hanging and freezing.

And also it takes forever to load game covers on marketplace, and if you click on a game it takes forever to load the featured downloads etc.

Plants fix everything.

Seriously, this is good news. The in-game dash can freeze for upwards of 30 seconds and it's just generally sluggish. This update can't come soon enough.

It definitely feels slower to me and as someone else mentioned, marketplace stuff takes too long or needs a refresh to get going sometimes. Oh well, as long as they are addressing it, all good.

First thing I noticed too. LOL

And I have personally narrowed it down to the friends list slowing things down. When I am offline, it flies, when I am online, it is SO slow.

I'm pretty sure it's not my friends list slowing things down, but I definitely notice a lot of slowness in the marketplace and game library.

Anything that they do to make the entire thing faster and let me hide the parts of the interface that I don't use would be appreciated.

I think the ads are fine, as they're relevant. But don't make the first thing I see a screen full of ads.

I agree. This is one of my main complaints as well. Otherwise I really like the NXE. It's very well organized.

When I power on Xbox, the dash doesn't load until I am signed in. :/ This is stupid at times. Last week during XBL downtime, there was a noticeable delay before I could start using the dash. Hope they fix this.

I've never had it hang for me. But then I don't have a load of friends in my list or a big/long download history etc. So maybe that helps me out speed wise.

I actually like having the ads there when I first sign in because I like to have a quick skim through to see if there's anything that interests me on the spotlight and inside xbox channels before I continue to boot a game or whatever.

^^ agreed, you get a quick look on what's new on the marketplace and it's not that much trouble to go one blade up. :p

Though, obviously, giving you the choice what the startup screen is would be best, think that was even an option with the old dash..

Well, it would seem the guide and marketplace is what needs to be tweaked. Still, it just shows how MS can and is flexing it's software muscle to keep the 360 going strong. I wonder if they'll sneak in any surprise updates/features later on.
