Duke Nukem Forever Still In Development

Gaming news has been removed. They only cover "big" news now when it comes to gaming.

@Dead_Monkey, I liked Doom 3 but again I don't think it lived up to the hype.

You mean like Bethesda buying up id Software? Indeedy, they'll regret nuking the gaming news section. Gaming never gets the respect it deserves, sigh.

Why?

I think the editorials caused a little too much chaos for the mods (people did tend to post more "negative" editorials as opposed to focussing on what they like.... - The Wii editorial was pretty terrible), but unless you can define "big" news for me this seems like a questionable move...

The GH is one of the biggest sections on NW.

Well, the Apple editorials are right out there too. The problem is the editorials, not the news.

Yeah true.

I can understand the premis of an editorial not being "news", it's an opinion piece, but I don't understand the draw for people to continually or immediately focus on things they don't like. Aside for DL's editorial on the next 360, we had one on Sony's poor marketing, a piece on Nintendo software (critical of it) and a critical piece on console DLC. Notice a trend? All articles focussed on things that are perceived as wrong/needing improvement by the writers.

I'd much rather see editorials written on things like indie gaming/opinions on how this generation has been impacted by social gaming and more online enabled games (playing with friends/co-op)/why games are fun in co-op?/what I would like to see in the future of FPS games and why I like them/best places to get gaming bargains/the top multiplayer games with friends/etc.

You know? Entertaining and useful pieces not always focussed on what company x/console x is doing wrong (not that these pieces don't have places, nothing inherently wrong in writing them).

If I were writing editorials I'd heavily favour a balance of telling people what I like and why over what I don't. Probably a 75:25 balance, at least a 60:30. I'd also focus some time on things directly useful to gamers like whats the top summer games/where to get good bargains/how to turn your PS3 into a media server (can't believe none of the gaming staff didn't cover this with PS3 Media Server... would get you a lot of hits, friendly thanks and be good for traffic :p - look at the view count on the PS3 forum topics on PS3 media servers). These are things we can actually benefit from in our homes, not spend time arguing online over.

That doesn't mean the comments won't fill up with disagreements if you write a positive piece, but generally speaking an article written with a positive vibe is less likely to come across as an "attack" or "rant" or "violent". Of course you'll still get people who disagree with you calling you a fanboy, a zealot and everything else, but as I said generally speaking when people write about something they like their tone/approach to writing tends to be more mature and relaxed as opposed to a "rant" that has to prove a point.

Although in saying all that the best writers who do get the job and are worthy of writing front page articles should be able to write an editorial about something they don't like in a respectable fashion (Y) It's just the perceived "balance" from the readers you're constantly fighting an uphill battle against...

There might be a space for branding editorial content separately. Newspapers have always historically had some pretty out-there stuff on their "editorial" pages and that's physically separate from the "news" content. Putting a different theme on editorials that helps call them out as being opinion pieces might help.

None of you can say a thing about working on staff until you're in the position yourself. Especially news staff which is easily the hardest and most demanding jobs.

Not to mention there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes which you don't know about. If you feel you can do a good job, well then you know what to do (Y)

Only now, at the end do you understand (my padawan).

This game is such a joke by now that it's almost more fun just to hear the bad news about it. 3D Realms had their chance for a decade but they screwed around too long and now it's "game over". I know there's a few die-hard fans out there that are still waiting for this, but I, for one, have grown up and moved on. I use to love D3D so it's a shame it has to end this way.
