dleiva
My xbox 360 just RROD'd and of course it's just a couple of months past the 3 year extended warranty. I need some advice if I should buy new or a refurb unit. I found an elite for $250 and I can get a 4 year warranty for another $60...should I do this or buy new? Here is the refurb unit...looks like a respectable vendor... Refurb 360 elite also has anyone used the hard drive transfer kits? I have a ton of saved games and rock band/guitar hero songs on the current hard drive (I could always redownload the songs). Thanks...
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted June 24, 2009 Subscriber² Share Posted June 24, 2009 No Xbox Elite is past the 3 yr warranty because it launched in 2007. Only the initial launch 360's plus those "+ a few months" after have expired from the RROD warranty. I wouldn't touch a refurb from a 3rd party, I'd be buying a new jasper from a store. edit: Glasses needed, I thought you said you had an elite  Sorry. My advice stands I wouldn't touch a refurb.
Astra.Xtreme
It shows it for $260 on my end. Also they claim the list price is $999.99 which is a crock. Sounds a little fishy to me.
JustGeorge
I can't speak for the refurb, but the transfer kit was a breeze. Connect the new drive to the rear USB port, insert disc, follow instructions and you're done!
Ji@nBing
Why not just try and fix the one you have now? It's pretty easy. I fixed mine in about 20 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsz0lNJ6JrQ.swf Do that, except don't bother with the Arctic Silver (unless you have some laying around). Just peel the top off of the thermal tape that was on the chips, making it double sided, and use that to attach the pennies. Worked perfectly for me. If that doesn't work, you can always try the xclamp mod. May as well give it a try, right? For only 20 mins of your time, what do you have to lose? sonrah
I've bought and returned 3 refurbs from the local micro center; one was banned from live as soon as I plugged it in, other two rrod-ed in about half an hour. Given that this was about two years ago, but lesson: don't buy xbox 360 refurbs.

MS don't ban instantly so you might buy a 2nd hand 360 then get banned 5 months later for piracy.
dleiva
Thanks for all the quick advice...after watching how simple the repair looks, I will give that a shot first, I can always pick up a new 360 Arcade version for less than $200 and plug in the existing hard drive if I can't do the repair myself. Thats what I would do. Given MS's recent announcement to start selling full 360 titles over XBL, I'm willing to bet a 500GB hard drive isn't too far off. Dead_Monkey
Just go find a new jasper. Drop your hard drive on it and call it a day. Then you can fix the old one, hock it on ebay.
