Rumor: Microsoft to Release 1TB Hard Drive for Xbox 360

Recommended Posts

I can't imagine enough people use their console as their main media center to justify using a USB port up on an external. Even with an extra USB brick attached.

I don't think I know a single guy who has a console who doesn't use their console as the primary media center - at least when it comes to viewing movies.

And why not - they're moderately priced, you just plug in the drive and bang you're rockin'. Since all controllers are bluetooth based you don't need the USB port for anything else anyway.

i don't use my 360 as a media center per se, although the DVD player has been seeing some action lately. I don't keep movies on the hard drive, the ones i rent from the Marketplace get removed automatically.

jianbing, you're close to the edge there...time for an upgrade or some serious deleting...

Security risk, plus external drives have to be formatted in FAT32. FAT32 won't store files larger than 4GB.

Sony and MS use proprietary file systems on their internal hard drives.

You can format your external hdd to be anything, all of mine are NTFS. Flash cards use FAT32 only.

Unless you mean the externals have to be FAT32 for the 360 to use them, but I don't think that's the case since it should be able to read NTFS and whatever file system iPods use as well.

This isn't entirely unfathomable. 3.5" drives aren't entirely huge, and there's absolutely nothing to say that MS have to use notebook hard drives. They do use them, but because the 360's hard drive is physically external, they can make a slightly fatter drive unit with a TB hard drive in it. It doesn't have to run over USB. Look at the XDKs, they're fat on top, admittedly, not because of hard drives, but the 360 could certainly accomodate more up there. The 360's file system can support the drive size, so honestly, I don't see why not.

Bingo.

And that is the case!

I don't think the price would have to be that high anyway. MS claim the current high cost is due to configuring the drives and putting them in enclosures, or something like that.

So I don't think the price would be based on multiples of the current size/price.

I have about 22GB left on my 120GB HDD.

Don't see myself needing 1TB to eb honest as I don't think that this 360 game download service appeals to me, I usually wait a month or two and buy the games second hand anyway.

In my opinion there's absolutely no point buying brand new - as soon as you buy something it usually halves in value and is instantly second hand - and a digital download has no resale value. And that goes for everything, not just games, furniture, cars etc.

... well, I suppose you can't download furniture but you see my point.

Well for me the point in buying brand new is so I don't have to wait an unknown amount of time. And some games don't drop all that much.
