Fid
Hi all, I use Photoshop for work, but unfortunately they cannot get me a license at the moment (I'm only there for another month and a half so not much point really). At any rate, I don't use many of the 'advanced features' of Photoshop anyway... however I do find the cropping/cutting of images really good. Is there an equivalent piece of software I can use for Mac that can... 1. Select parts of an image at a specific ratio (i.e. when you shrink an image down, it would definitely be at 160x120px or something like that). 2. Shrink images down to a specific size (e.g. 160x120px). I've looked at GIMP, but not sure if it can do that yet. Any other recommendations? Cheers! John S. Veteran Posted June 27, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 27, 2009 I believe gimp will do all that. That was my first thought before reading through your whole post.

-KJ
Gimp is as close to Photoshop as you'll get for free. I'm willing to bet it has those basic functions.
Dysphoria
Yeah, I've been using gimp for a while on my WindowsPC, Linux platform and now on my Mac. It a great alternative. Cheers

Fid
Ah, it looks like I should give GIMP more of a chance and explore it more, I'll have a play with it tonight. I'll also have a look at the other suggestions, thanks for that everyone. While I certainly don't mind paying for software, the mixture of only needing simple resizing features and being short of money would rather me use free alternatives. Cheers! Phantom Helix
Pixelmator is a fantastic application, i know its $59 but it is worth it, My first start with image editing software was JASC Paint Shop Pro, which i still use PaintShop Pro Photo Ultimate on Windows, i have used Photoshop through the years only every once in a while when i can 'cough' find a copy 'cough' and i have never really liked the true "PRO" apps, their interfaces, to me anyway seem far to overwhelming and unnecessary anyway Pixelmator also use the power of the GPU
PyX
Definately Pixelmator, it's plain awesome and there's this Spider update coming very soon :) For $59, it's the closest app to Photoshop I've ever seen in my life, for like not even 10% of the price. It's native, it makes great use of Leopard's technologies, there are a couple of things better than Photoshop, etc. and each update brings a lot of stuff and is free :) Asking for a "free" Photoshop-equivalent is pretty extreme IMO. I'm not saying Photoshop is really worth like $1000, but asking for a free app that does as much is a little exagerate! I'm pretty sure Preview can do the cropping for you though ! Quillz
No free application will come close to matching Photoshop's feature set, although Pixelmator has most of the most popular and necessary tools.

a1ien
Wait, you're only there for a month and a half? Why don't you burn through the 30 day trial for starters.
Fid
I probably could have worded the question slightly better... I know you wouldn't get an 'equivalent' of Photoshop... but what I mean't was something that was "in that direction" and can do most of the basic stuff PS can. Tried out GIMP and can use that to cut and crop, going to try pixelmator though too. a1ien - I did think of using a trial... but what after that 30 day trial :p haha If worst comes to the worst, I will just download and use the trial, but wanted to try a few other options first. crazzyyfool
Even Apple's own Preview app included with OSX has good editing functions. The attached was made up exclusively in Preview, no Photoshop involved. :p
