Which RTS Game?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I was hoping people could give opinions which they think is the best (but quite recent) RTS game, and why? I haven't played RTS games since Age of Empires 2, but I used to enjoy that so I want to try one again.

Empire: Total War

Medieval II: Total War

World in Conflict

Company of Heroes

Command & Conquer 3

/other?

Thanks.

I can't speak for the other games, but I would recommend staying away from Command and Conquer 3, and instead try Red Alert 3. For a returning RTS fan it's probably shallow enough to get into at first.

I recently purchased Empire: Total war and I'm enjoying it for quite a bit. On the other hand I got it off steam when it was 50% off so yeah.. World in conflict is good as well. But different than any other rts you've played probably. And another vote for Red Alert 3 as well.

Command and Conquer series wins it for me. Great storyline, and everything else that goes with it. (Y)

I have C&C3, however I cannot get it to run, as it gives me a DX9 error message, when it came out originally it said it wouldn't work on Vista x64, now two years later you think that EA would have fixed that. Did they?

James123,

Take a look at BattleForge.

Warcraft 3

Starcraft

Company of Heroes

By the way, how is BattleForge?

I haven't played in a while, I know they've made a lot of changes, it was great when I played it. I suggest checking it out.

I haven't played Supreme Commander, but I did play TA, I've wanted to play SC since it came out but now since I have a highend system I should go and buy it.

Medieval II is not an rts, it's turn-based. The battles are real-time but they take place in a turn-based structure. If you thought Age of Empires 2 was a nice medieval warfare game, then you're in for a real treat with Medieval II. But again it plays very differently, it has nothing to do with a conventional rts where you gather resources and rush with a bunch of cheapo units, etc, here it's slow empire-building a la Civilization IV interleaved with large-scale realistic real-time battles and sieges. If you ever saw Lords of the Realm II (Impressions, 1996) then it's really the same premise, only better executed and much more complex.

Empire is the same thing but in the Napoleonian era, if you got a very beefy computer and like that epoch then it's also a nice choice.

Red Alert 3 is comical and very conventional, if the premise of mixing bears and Apocalypse Tanks sound fun to you then give it a try, personally I couldn't be bothered to even finish the campaign, it's way too similar to previous games of the series (and other C&C titles) and I'm kinda fed up with conventional RTS games in general. Get resource gatherers, a few barracks, crank out units, rush, rince, repeat. Yawn. C&C3 is basically the same thing, only with a more gritty style and more futuristic technology. If you're used to AOK, C&C plays even faster, a bit like Starcraft.

In the sci-fi setting, I heard Supreme Commander was quite an innovating game, but when I tried it looked bland, performed bad and seemed to have too much economic micro-management, but I can't say I gave it a fair evaluation. There's a demo, try it and tell us what you liked.

I would say instead say; don't stay way from RA3 but, rather try CnC3 instead (Kane's Wrath). I think RA3 had to much micro management of unit abilities.

Also take a look at Age of Empires III + it's two Expansions (War Chiefs & Asian Dynasties). We've recently got to playing AoE III at our LANs and it's brought back a similar good feeling as when we used to play AoE II at our LANs way back when.

I would recommend World in Conflict, Company of Heroes and Demigod. All very fast paced RTS games that still require thinking and can be quite lengthy if played by two or more very good players.

I would recommend Supreme Commander and Sins of a Solar Empire as well.

I would like to play Empire Total War but I've heard that it's still a bit buggy. One of my friends had his game of around 6 hours crash and corrupt his save.

Command and Conquer hands down. GOod game player, interesting missions, several factions to mix things up with and lovely interwoven video mission briefs and story throughout. Just make sure you play it on hard mode though and that you like multiplayer or you may feel you did not get your money's worth out of the game. My view is a lil biased though I have always liked the franchise ever since i laid eyes on the original sucker back in about 95'

Theres some good recommendations here though, Sup COm was cool for something different and Sins of a Solar Empire was a pretty epic game in terms of playability.

I have C&C3 and cannot get it to run, as it won't run on Vista x64 even two years after the game came out, you'd think EA would've fixed this by now, no such luck, they company is full of a bunch of retards who are basically shooting themselves in the foot and telling Gamers who have Vista x64 that they want nothing to do with us.

Works for me... what error message do you get?

Demigod's single player campaign lasts about 2hrs.
