KamiQuazi
Windows Vista came with my laptop and I havent had to deal with this issue before. How does the installation of Upgrade media know that you own the previous version of windows? Via CD key or the older media itself?
Yusuf M. Veteran Posted June 29, 2009 Veteran Share Posted June 29, 2009 With Windows XP, all you needed was a qualifying disc to be in the disc drive. However, that has changed with Windows Vista. Instead of checking for a disc, it would check for a qualifying Windows installation. I'm not aware of any changes to this process with regard to Windows 7 but I doubt it changed. To answer your question: Your computer is checked for a qualifying Windows installation during the setup process. Once that's found, it'll perform an in-place upgrade. What that does is install over your current Windows installation and transfers it to a folder called 'Windows.old'. If an in-place upgrade is unfeasible, a "clean" install is carried out. ToneKnee
Will Windows 7 deactivate my Windows Vista key when I upgrade? I don't believe it will deactivate the actual key, but a new key (the windows 7 key) will be put in place, though, if you choose to go back to Vista, you can just use the old key as normal.
