Rumor II: Xbox 360 Pro to Disappear

Ars Technica got word from an inside source that both Sony and Microsoft plans to cut the price of their home consoles later this year. The mole, who has a proven track record, told Ars that we can expect the Xbox 360 Pro to disappear as early as next month, with Microsoft putting together some great games into Pro bundles in order to clean up inventory. Then you can expect a price cut that will have the Xbox 360 Elite replacing the Xbox 360 Pro:

So what are we going to do without the Pro systems? Nothing. The Elite units, with the 120GB hard drive, are going to become the Pro-level system after an early September price cut.

If true, could this be Microsoft's strategy to prepare the Xbox 360 for the launch of Project Natal? May be, we should ask Steve Ballmer... Is Xbox 360 Natal the new Elite?

Isn't more like the Elite will disappear and the Pro stays with the Elite HD?

Elite HD? whats that? Please don't say its a Elite with HDMI cause im sure all elites have that anways.

I think the OP is just saying that MS are getting rid off the Pro systems so only the arcade and elites are left, and the elites eventually replacing the Pros..with maybe the possibility of another top-end package coming in later..perhaps with Natal...

They are both identical minus the hdmi cable in the box. I wonder if MS will stick an HDMI cable in the Pro box now and will they offer it in Black. Might make sense for consumers.

Arcade - White

Pro - Black

Sorted.

I doubt a more high end package will ever exist again when Sony price drops. Microsoft want to maintain a gap and the Elite getting the chop is the smart and easy option. Even with Natal, I doubt they want to be close to the Playstation price at mass consumer level.

i didn't realize the elite came with a HDMI cable? I thought the main difference was the120gb HDD and elite came with a headset..not just the colours.

I meant the Elite's hard drive. I guess HD gets confusing in this instance...

I just tend to look at it as the Pros getting a hard drive upgrade (that happens to be the same size as the current Elites) and that there will eventually be a new Elite, like you mention maybe with Natal and maybe with that 1TB drive that's been speculated.

I think it makes sense that they'd want to get all the pro's with 60GB hdds outta stock and push the 120GB as the standard model from here on out. That also makes room for a new high end SKU with natal and a bigger HDD matching with the other rumor.

Only time will tell, but a price cut is a given I think.

I just said "hard drive" in my head and wrote HD...

maybe im abit slow or something... but which is higher up, the Pro or the Elite?

The Elite.

Anyway, I didn't think of Natal becoming the new Elite at all, I instantly thought of the Elite being renamed to the Pro, and the new Elite having the gigantic 500GB HDD that's been rumoured.

what they should do is get rid of the arcade so all consoles have a hard drive

Why? No hard drive will always be cheaper than having a hard drive, and the Arcade includes 512MB of onboard memory. So why would you get rid of the Arcade and not just lower its price?

And that 512 is only going to continue to grow. I think the lower level units are going to remain BC-free (without an add-on hard drive), but we could be up to 16gigs of solid state storage pretty quickly.

I dunno, upping the internal flash ups the price at this point. Plus you're pretty much screwing over all the people who have the original ones with 512MB. Unless you then offer a bigger memory card as well.

I'd much rather see a lower priced 300-500GB HDD for the 360 so I can start d/ling full games when the time comes.

The price of flash keeps going down and the minimum size for each flash chip will continue to grow. Remember that flash in on the Moore's law side of the fence.

Why?

Because MS drives are terribly priced so offering at least 20GB to everyone would help everyone enjoy Live more if they decided to start using movie/media/XBLA features.

You've even got single player games nowadays that require a drive, Forza 3 for one... (2 discs, one installs data)

Good point AB. We definitely need all consoles to have a HDD now. Who knows, Forza 3 could be the start of many games that need the HDD to store data on (just like the PS3 lol)

And MS will never get rid of the Arcade model..for now anyway Its the cheapest next gen console on the market..they probably sell 2 arcades to 1 pro systems..NOTE:not actual figure :)

This doesn't surprise me at all. A friend went looking for a pro console with a jasper chipset and knowing that the manufacturing date needed to be dec 2008 or later asked at 3 separate gamestops. Finally found one that was manufacture in dec of '08. Everything else was before dec and had the old chip sets in them.

They don't have 20GB drives anymore though. So they'd have to drop the price of the 60GB's alot and hope the arcade owners pick those up so stock can run out.

Then they can drop the 120GB price more and offer a bigger drive at $150
