Rumor II: Xbox 360 Pro to Disappear

Recommended Posts

Microsoft seem to be running around not having a clue what they are doing, yet Sony know exactly what they are doing with the ps3 slim etc.

Whens Natal out btw??

What makes you say that? Just because *we* don't know what's going on, it doesn't mean to say Microsoft doesn't - they're just better at keeping their cards to their chest. Microsoft have probably already have this all planned out.

EDIT: Natal is *predicted* 2010, but Microsoft have said they're going to wait until they have a substantial amount of games for it at launch (i.e. not 1 bundle game).

I too am finding this hard to believe. I can't believe they would be so stupid as to sell a non-budget (ie. Arcade) console that is not capable of outputting HD out of the box without a separate purchase.

Sony has been doing it for 3 years.

Correct, but now MS are following in Sony's footsteps to do something as stupid when they have been giving at least component for 3 years.

I hope not. It's '09, at least keep the component cable.

Guess they aren't worried about Sony going to $299 then. Must be $349 for a PS3 Slim. The Arcade is cheaper but you wouldn't want to go toe to toe with a PS3 with the Elite surely. So long Pro. Seems to be out of stock on most sites as does the Arcade for some reason.

?

The Elite used to be $399, so is the PS3.

They're reshuffling to go in-line with what is believed to be a $299 Slim, you'll never see the 360 more expensive than the PS3, it wouldn't give a good consumer perception of value since everyone knows the PS3 launched at $600. It is therefore perceived as a "more expensive" device.

It's a pre-emptive strike so as the 360 isn't more expensive than the PS3/Slim, even if it were only for a few days (say MS had waited till after Gamescom where it's believed the official PS3 price cut will be announced, or even their own conference which is the day after Sony's).

edit: I forgot to mention this catalogue says the Elite @ $299 is to start on the 30th. PS3 Slim is rumoured to launch on the 1st of September, as I said above, pre-emptive strike ;)

Oh, I forgot. Use to the price difference here in the UK with the PS3 and Elite. Still thinks it weird that they sell for the same price in the US, makes the PS3 a cracking deal and the 360 a what are you thinking!. Yea, pre emptive for sure.

Probably because USA is 360 turf and EU historically Sony, therefore more aggressive pricing in EU.

The Arcade/Pro are still quite a bit cheaper than a PS3 in America though, so it doesn't really matter that the Elite/PS3 are $399. IMO it does make the Elite "overpriced" but when there's options people just go cheaper. PS3 has no options other than $399 which is why the price cut is going to help quite a bit, where as MS' cut is more a tactical reshuffle to hit out with a pre-emptive strike. You're getting a bit more hard drive space, but there's been a 360 at $299 in America for a while.

Still doesn't make it a bad deal, if I were American and had my Halo 360 over there, I'd be buying an Elite at $299 to get rid of this fugly POS and get a black console (black console >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> white console >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> no console >>>>>>>> fisher price console (red/green/yellow/etc).)

Why did you get a Halo themed 360 in the first place :p???

It was on offer with a free copy of Halo 3, you know, the game that really should have been bundled with it anyway :p I knew it had a rechargeable battery pack as well.

Xbox 360 Pro Being Phased Out Pretty Soon

By Luke Plunkett on August 5, 2009 at 10:30 PM

The staple Xbox 360 - the Xbox 360 Pro - looks set to march straight off retail shelves and into the history books, if new console packaging is anything to go by.

First hinted at by Ars Technica?s ever-reliable mole in June, then further hinted at by new 360 packshot renders later that month, photos sent to us by GameStop employees earlier this week seem to offer proof that Microsoft will soon go from offering three Xbox 360 consoles to just two.

Look at the spine of these new, actual 360 Arcade boxes (pictured above, on the right) arriving at retailers across the US. Unlike previous models of the Arcade (on the left), which showed the relative inclusions offered in the Arcade, Pro and Elite models of the 360, this new box only shows the Arcade and Elite. No Pro.

Wonder if this means the Elite is in line for a price cut (to the price the Pro is currently), as it assumes the mantle of ?standard? 360 console? It?d make sense, especially as a spoiler for Sony?s surely-impending launch of the PS3 Slim.

300pro.jpg

Looks like we have an execution date for the Xbox 360 Pro model, with this shot from a Meijer catalogue due on August 30 indicating the 360 Elite is in line for a Pro-sized price cut.

You'll remember, of course, that the origins of this rumour - Ars Technica's ever-reliable Microsoft mole - are that the 360 Pro is being phased out, taken off the market entirely, and that the 360 Elite will have its price slashed to that of the Pro to compensate. This will leave only two 360 consoles to choose from: the cheap, hard drive-less Arcade and the 120GB HDD Elite.

'Lo and behold, according to this catalogue, that move looks like it'll take place a couple of weeks from now. So long, 360 Pro model. You lived, you red-ringed, you loved.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back from them. If they don't confirm today there's a good change they'll announce next week during Gamescom.

Update: Reached for comment this afternoon Microsoft had this to say: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."

Seeing as how I've been a Gamer for 30 years....

That's cool an all but I said if you don't read the gaming news on the forums you're very likely going to dupe a lot. Just saying man, in the past few days you've posted a plethora of duplicate news articles :p Everyone dupes from now and then but it's just seems you don't actually read the news in the GH enough to know what's been posted.
