George P Global Moderator Posted July 2, 2009 Global Moderator Share Posted July 2, 2009 Well, remember that part of TV viewing and gaming is people sitting around and enjoying one another's company. HMDs tend to put you in your own space. That's true, unless they look multiple ones together and so on.
carmatic
If you read the article it says that ODST has mystery areas. And that Reach could implement Natal. yeah thats kind of what i meant, these mystery areas are most likely to be related to Natal in some way
carmatic
Just because "you" as a singular person can't get used to it doesn't mean it's a bad system and others can't. some people can't use a game controllers, millions can't stand the PS controller. millions more play with controllers just fine. the thing is, the neck is a 'point' type of control, something like a mouse... a joystick is a 'push' control, you control how fast you spin by pushing in one direction, you dont directly control where you end up pointing... Another option is the 3d flat panel displays that are popping up all over the place, including some that don't require glasses. the problem is that by having to face the screen all the time, your neck would have to behave like a joystick, look straight at the screen = centered joystick, because it would be impossible to turn a full circle while still seeing the screen if your head motion was 1:1 in the game ... its meant to be something like a 'secondary' view controller, you'd use it to quickly glance left or right but you wouldnt use it to aim your gun, for instance also, displays only cover a fraction of your view, and having a 3d display only helps you gauge depth from a distance, it doesnt completely immerse your view like what Natal does to your body movements with VR glasses, Natal can eliminate the use of those funky gloves and stuff, as well as track your full body motion... and the VR glasses themselves free you from having to stay pointed at the screen... but i think that glasses the same resolution as some high end displayes would cost more than those displays... carmatic
and that's why it's awesome. just imagine for a second. moving your neck like you move your thumb... you have no idea how fast your ingame view is going to turn for how much you moved your neck, and you have to point your neck the other way if you overshoot... awesome? I'm not running and jumping around my house to shoot things. Not happening. Gesture based controls are definitely an option though, implemented correctly. Dead_Monkey
well, 1:1 as in the direction that you are facing, as in how you are supposed to control where you look in-game... Well, again, I don't know why you would want to do that anyway. If you can move your head ten degrees left to look into your lefthand mirror in a driving game, why not do that instead of turning 90 degrees? Wasted movement, and requires a lot of ridiculous expensive technology.

Call it what you like, this is what we're talking about, not shutter glasses (remember the Master System, no, you probably don't, it had LCD shutter glasses before you were born).
