Blame WoW For Starcraft II's Late, Late Release

sc2.jpg

Blizzard's Starcraft was released in 1998. It's sequel, Starcraft II, won't be out until at least 2009. Why the hold-up? Blame World of Warcraft.

Rob Pardo has told Eurogamer that development on Starcraft II began in 2003, and there's been a playable build since 2005. But then along came World of Warcraft.

One of the reasons that StarCraft II had some delays very early on in development is because a fair amount of the design team went onto World of Warcraft for a year to really help finish that game off.

They had a lot of really great experience to bring, with their knowledge of how they approached the map editor problems, how they dealt with balancing - which we could then leverage into class balancing.

So to anyone wondering why Starcraft II looks so "old fashioned" for a 2009 game, there you go.

This just in: it takes time to make video games, and sometimes delays occur.

In all fairness this isn't just a delay because there was stuff about the game that wasn't just right yet, but the development team actually went and helped with WoW instead of SC2.

But in any case, I think the article was designed to invoke a reaction.

Blizzard games always look a bit retro for their time; Blizzard aims for a very low common denominator in terms of hardware, and this serves them well. Their games still look and always meet global success. I think SC2's graphics are exactly what they should be for this generation, given that it's made that Blizzard.

Such a huge company and they don't have enough "designers" ?

Why would WoW Team need help with design ? The new expansion ? Poor excuse I say.

But, good job covering your asses, whoever is responsible for SC2.

It's understandable. I'm just glad that they plan on releasing StarCraft II. I'd hate to see it get cancelled like StarCraft: Ghost.

No need to blame WoW or anything else. Let them take their time, create a great singleplayer story, polish the multiplayer, make the whole package worth buying. I am sure no one who understands Blizzard's way of work will complain for the delay. :)

will they still launch the 3 separate chapters ? or due to this delay they will launch the entire game instead of doing 1-2-3 ?

Yes, Blizzard plans on launching 3 separate campaigns for StarCraft 2. The first one, which is purported to be released in late-2009, will be the Terran campaign titled "Wings of Liberty".

If it doesnt come out this fall or early next year, I give up on it. IDC how much money WOW brings in. It makes people waste there lives/loose there jobs for a ****ing game.

Either, HIRE more people, or finish the damn game.

If you read the article correctly you would have figured out that Blizzard took designers away from SC2 to finish WoW for it's release. Not an expansion, but to release the game. Blizzard wasn't banking off WoW yet as it hadn't been released. Blizzard wasn't nearly as huge as it was when WoW was fresh compared to how it is now.

As for the delay in the game, I don't mind. If it means a better product I can wait a few more years so I don't end up with lackluster game that fails to meet expectations.

Yep, still 1-2-3 can you say 150 $$$ ?

Of coarse; Blizzard now, along with Activision are going to follow the "Call of Duty Cash Cow Plan"; so count of shelling out $150 at least for the full StarCraft 2 experience. Also plan on putting forth another couple bucks here and there for downloadable content; maybe some maps or units to entice your pallet eh?

I can't wait, but I'm also disappointed that they completely removed the LAN feature. Greedy pigs..

Greedy pigs indeed; more like fat merlocks!

If you bought Starcraft and Brood War when they came out, you'd have spent 100$, so this is just like having 2 expansions packs instead of one, not a big deal. A lot of excellent games have had two expansion packs, Civilization IV for instance. Besides, if you don't think it's worth your money, why buy the whole series? And if you'd rather have them all released at the same time, well just wait another 3 years for the gold edition which will include all three episodes for maybe 60$. No one's forcing you into buying anything.

Me, I think more Starcraft is always good news, and it's always worth my money. :)

It's called an expansion pack for a reason. Blizzard simply plans on releasing two for StarCraft II. I personally think it's worth it. You could always choose to not buy it. I mean, no one is forcing you. Sure, you might miss out on the Zerg and Protoss campaigns... but at least you have multiplayer to keep you busy.
