Minifig
Champions Online is a superhero-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game by City of Heroes/Villains developer Cryptic Studios based on the Champions license. Game Informer's preview revealed that the game is being developed for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360. The game's rules will be based loosely on the HERO System ruleset. It is now in the beta stage of development. The game will feature a robust character creation like City of Heroes, including the ability to edit a hero's movement; for instance, a wolf-like hero may opt to leap on all fours rather than on two, a robot may select robotic, jerky movement rather than humanoid, and a mentalist may opt to float inches above the ground rather than walk. The player may also edit the manifestation of their powers, including color and form; for instance, a heat ray may resemble flames or a force field may have a color specified in the editor. Players will be able to custom design their own arch-nemesis in the same fashion as their own hero (selecting a costume, their powers, their name and history), who will appear throughout their careers. If a player defeats his arch-nemesis permanently, they have the option to create a new one or finish their careers without another arch-nemesis. One significant difference is the elimination of any character class or archetype system ? all characters can take any skill or power equally. The game will also make it easier for a player to spend most of his hero's career as a solo hero if they desire. The game features a paper-doll inventory system, and items physically appear on the character when equipped; the player may select to remove the item from the visible GUI and still receive the effects from it. At level 25 players will be able to create their own custom nemesis along with his or her minions. The nemesis will ambush the player throughout the game. The level cap is at 40, with special endgame content and gameplay at the cap. ---- As someone in the NDA restricted beta, all I have to say is: Look forward to this one folks, it's coming along beautifully and is A LOT of freaking fun. Gotenks98
I will add the game so far looks as ugly as sin compared to other games that are out now. Its just a sad ripoff of City of Heroes. Hell they even used some of the same music and sound effects from City of Heroes instead of creating their own. Its going to go down as a big MMO phail just like Conan but alot worse. Not trying to troll or anything its just I hate that this game is trying to pass itself off as being better than City of Heroes when clearly it isnt. Gotenks98
Does Champions actually have a cohesive story unlike COH? I hate that the most about that game. CoH does have a Cohesive storyline, you just havent played enough of the missions yet. I been playing CoH for 5+ years now and have played almost every single mission the story is well thought out its just spread amongst many different story arcs so you have to play more of them to get the core story. I am not sure about champions, all I know is the developers are desperate to get folks to play that ugly game. They even went as far as creating forum accounts on the city of heroes message boards just to send out beta invites to city of heroes players. Just about every interview they have done with the developers of Champions they are constantly trying to compare themselves to CoH saying how better they are. Rule number 1 you never mention your competition because all it does is give them free advertising, new people will end up going to city of heroes when they find out champions sucks. I totally see the pc version failing but the console version might survive.

Minifig
I will add the game so far looks as ugly as sin compared to other games that are out now. Its just a sad ripoff of City of Heroes. It's not ugly as sin. It's designed to look like a comic book, and when you get into game it does a DAMN good job of it. It was also designed by a team of people who worked on City of Heroes but were unhappy with the way it was coming together. It's actually MUCH better than City of Heroes. I've been playing City of Heroes since launch and I can tell you that the beta is a lot, lot more fun. Does Champions actually have a cohesive story unlike COH? I hate that the most about that game. It has an even more cohesive storyline, and arcs bend into each other. :) I signed up for the Beta last year when they opened registration, and never got chosen. Open beta is coming soon. Wakers
Was looking forward to this a year ago, not so much now. Looks too much like CoH, which wasn';t a great deal of fun after an hour of plying.

Actually yes the game was designed by the original devs of city of heroes but those were the ones who originally screwed CoH up. When that group left things started getting better. We got more powersets spread across all the Arch-types instead of being confined to just certain arch-types. We got more customization of weapons and costumes, soon to have more in the next coming issue. We got the flashback system, we got inventions (loot system), we even got user created content with the mission architech system (100 times better than said nemesis system). All of these things Jack Emmert was against doing when he was in charge of City of Heroes. Seriously dude you sound like you were paid to say champions is better than city of heroes. 99.9999% of the folks who I have talked to say they hated champions and that is not better than city of heroes. From the little time I had to view it over at a friends house I wasnt impressed at all. I hated the cell shaded look which is why I say its ugly as sin. Comic Book Guy
Open beta is coming soon. Be that as it may, you'd think they'd have chosen a lot of the people that signed up when it opened, I've got a highend system, so to test on my system would have been good for them, and now I must wait for OB but yet I still check to see if I get an email inviting me in. Gotenks98
The one game that I think will give CoH a run for its money is going to be DC universe online. That game looks great, and with fan base of dc it will do well starting out. The only strike it has so far is that its going to be on the ps3 and not the 360. But overall I think DCUO will be the one thing that pushes the current CoH Developers into overdrive to keep their players from switching games. _BeanZ_
Played it - with any luck they'll actually hire some support staff so that other people aren't left stuck in an instance for upwards of 36 hours without any response like I was. :(

I played CoX back in '05 on and off into '06, tried it when they had that come back and play thing, and the graphics looked awful, plus the mobs who were my level or lower than me were still way overpowered, so like back then I logged off and won't touch it again. They have bsaicly taken the game they made and added the stuff to it that they weren't able to with CoH. Well I think this is looking nice and the whole archnemies system looks awesome. Be that as it may, you'd think they'd have chosen a lot of the people that signed up when it opened, I've got a highend system, so to test on my system would have been good for them, and now I must wait for OB but yet I still check to see if I get an email inviting me in. Not always remember they need to test this on a range of systems. Of course they know it will work on high end so IMO they would want more middle to low end pcs to see how it runs on them. You must got a low end video card, thats the only way the graphics would look bad on this game. I play on max settings and the game looks great. Now about you saying the critters were overpowered, this I doubt, even the non-solo friendly AT can still hold their own against a few critters. You must be doing something wrong. Yes I admit the game has gone thru a ton of changes but most of those changes that were negative that caused folks to leave were done by the original devs of CoH, which who are now the devs of Champions Online. That is the big reason I wont be touching that game because I know they are going to screw the game up again.

Of course I know this, I know this better than anyone here. I been with CoH since day one and have been active in the forum community there too. Anyone who has been with the forums for that long will clearly see this game for what it is, a cheap knock off of CoH. Aside from a few new travel powers and that underwater zone they havent done anything huge that CoH hasnt done or are currently working on said feature. I hate everything Champions Online stands for because its trying to pass itself off as CoH 2 just so people will pick up the game to play it when clearly it isnt. If you looked at some of the dev interviews you can see that they are trying to compare themselves to CoH the whole time. As for the nemesis system, we can do this now in CoH its called the missio architech where you the player can right the story, customize the critters with the same powersets we use, create the costume for them "nemesis" group, even choose the mission instance you will be fighting on. Again nemesis system on champions online falls extremely short when compared to them mission architech.
Gotenks98
To the original poster, I dont want to come across as a troll or butthole but this is something I am very passionate about. Normally I dont even argue about stuff like this because nothing bothers me this much. I just dont want people to be mislead thinking that Champions Online is something that it isnt (CoH 2) and never will be. To me the tipping point on this was when the champion's devs created user accounts on CoH forums trying to send out their beta invites just to get folks to play their game. That to me is extremely bad form and should never be done under any circumstances. To me this would be like microsoft going to a mac only forum and sending out beta invites to the newest windows software. You can clearly see how wrong it is to do this. You should have faith in your own product to not need to do that.

No but CoH has always had issues with ATI cards. Its just a known fact. For some reason they dont fully support all the features in this game. I dont blame ATI I blame CoH on that one. If you had an Nvidia card things would be different. We got tons of threads in the CoH forums about ATI and how it doesnt work well with this game. Usually the ATI users end up having to turn off certain features in the options just to get the game playing for them. Whats sad is that they did a contest a while back to win an ATI card, most of us were like WTF??? Why do this when we know the card isnt going to work well with this game. Now I can possibly see champions online doing a better job with the ATI stuff but thats about it.
Comic Book Guy
I may go back to nVIDIA when they come out with the GT300 because it's supposed to change the way GPUs are made, but I have a feeling ATi will follow with the same tech after they see how nVIDIA fairs with it. CoH is the only reason I couldnt go with an all ATI system on my recent rig. Whenever they decide to fix those issues I will be changing to ATI. My current card is a GTX 260. Runs the game great on vista 64 and windows 7 64. My work rig runs the game decent, my only issue on the ATI card on that is the water textures for reflections are all screwed up. I think there may be a similiar problem with DDO, because the game came out in '06 and the graphics looked great, Guild Wars came out in '05, now I got into the CB for the new DDO which is going F2P, and turned all the settings on high and the game looked like sh*t, however I've got all the settings on GW turned on high and the game looks like it just came out recently and not 4 years ago.
